I guess what I really wanted out of this poll was an estimate of how long I have until publicly opposing the Trump administration becomes too dangerous and I have to shut up, leave the country, or accept prison / death. But I didn't state that beforehand, so interpret the poll however you like.

@skyfaller The ruling class in America, if they are smart, will continue doing what they've done since the founding. Allow vocal dissent (which serves as a pressure relief valve), manufacture consent, and only kill movements and leaders that could possibly change this order (MLK, native american tribes, etc etc).

If they start arresting people for posting that's just going to radicalize more people and make people stop posting and Do Something instead.

@sc68cal 1. as you point out, effective opposition means doing more than posting, and I have e.g. taken part in arrestable actions in the past.

2. it wasn't safe to oppose slavery in the Confederacy, or Hitler in the Third Reich. It isn't safe to oppose Putin in Russia, you might fall out a window. I don't see why the USA would remain a place you can speak without government retribution, unless there is a strong movement to make it safe.

@skyfaller that's the big question, isn't it? I honestly can't tell. I think for me a big indicator is how quickly the response to protests becomes militarized and overblown. This week feels very telling to me, both what society will excuse and how brutal he thinks he can be out the gate.
