An etiquette question from someone with two ears and one mouth: how do you choose what to post and boost here? I try hard to keep it to mountain-related things, because that's the instance I'm on, and it's generally positive. I also enjoy reading about some tech stuff, and masochistically "enjoy" some US politics, because that's where I live. I don't want to inflict those things on my followers, becase I try to be a decent human.
In the old days, you would post to different Usenet channels. Do you create a bunch of different usernames and somehow merge them into a single feed?

@drdirtbag I dunno the intent but I see folks using mastodon both ways, creating accounts specific to different interests (which sounds annoying to me) and posting a range of things from a single account. There doesn't seem to be a wrong way to do it. Hashtags do seem important, that way followers can mute or follow individual topics.

@drdirtbag for me, I “follow the whole person”. I’m on an information security instance but most of my posting is about hiking. It’s really only affecting the main feed (as otherwise, non followers won’t see it)
I’d certainly enjoy posts from you on other topics, and not just mountains (though I do love them!)
Hashtags work both ways and also let people ignore/hide stuff they don’t want to see (like uspol). CW’s for certain topics. I think making multiple identities is too onerous and unnecessary for most.
With regard to boosting, I do it much more on the fediverse due to there being no algorithm. I believe there are settings in certain clients if you don’t want to see a followers boosts and only their posts, but I haven’t seen it.

@drdirtbag A thought provoking discussion. I try to stay within the mountain posts/boosts generally or at least something uplifting or related to recent thought from a post. Its not hard to find a lot of reactive negative posts here and those drain me so I'll avoid or unfollow. My motivation here is to share inspiration around some outdoor mountain adventures and hopefully be inspiring to others to explore more. I think everyone's answer varies, I sometimes wonder what random things to post. Like would anyone be interested in hearing my friend's band practice rocking out right now!? Probably not, Idk maybe loose & gain some followers, would it matter? I keep reminding myself whats my intention, and everyone will have a different answer and ultimately comes down to what do you want to give & share with others?
I can say Dr. Dirtbag your adventure posts inspire me. Its raised more curiosity to understand more what goes on in your decisions, lifestyle strategies and approach to life!

@drdirtbag I think the polite thing is to choose a consistent voice and stick with it. Personally on Mastodon I post almost exclusively photos from adventures and boost very little. When people follow me they can look at my past posts and see what they're getting. @jds boosts a lot, but it's stuff I like, mostly photos from people's adventures. Some folks I like their posts but find their boosts less interesting so I turn off their boosts in my feed.

@cutting @jds That sounds good to me. I "like" a lot of posts to mean that I genuinely appreciate them. If I like your post, it made my dqy better. A "boost" means that I think it should be shoved in a couple hundred people's faces.

@drdirtbag @cutting IMO the power of the Fediverse is really that everyone has the tools to manage their own experience. Posts, replies, boosts can all be filtered, muted, and exclusively followed or not.
If you started daily blogging politics it’s a non-issue for me. I can choose to turn my politics filters on or off and see your other posts regardless.
It’s boring when people over self regulate. I have multiple lists of people who post & boost hundreds of things daily. I love them!

@jds @drdirtbag I'm too lazy to setup and maintain filters. I prefer to just follow folks who don't post too much stuff I don't care about. 🤷

@jds @drdirtbag @cutting
Same here.
The only thing I dislike is when people talk about <stuff I don't like> and start avoiding to use terms or hashtags I can filter on.

@drdirtbag There is no obligation to keep it mountain related only. As mentioned by several people, people follow the person, not part of them. If you use hashtags, people can mute them in case not interested or to keep them sane (talking to you #uspol 😜). Another option (which you are using already) is to post "unlisted". In that way the post does not end up in the local timeline of the instance, but still is public and searchable. Sure, the thing that brought us here are the mountains, but do not feel too restrained.
That said, I personally felt that my personal (not instance-) IT related nerd-stuff was better suited on another account. As I run a personal instance anyway (sandbox where I test upgrades etc before deploying on mountains.social), I use that one. People follow me there for this IT stuff and some couldn't care less about a nice trail.
In the Fediverse app "Rodent" you can login to various accounts and indeed show them combined in one feed.
But: whatever suits you.

@drdirtbag When I became active on the Fedi a few years ago, I had the same question. Over time, it turned out that for me, the answer was "post whatever I want to; people will choose whether to follow me."
I'm using CWs (headlines, basically) quite liberally. This way, people who see my posts get to decide whether they want to read about that thing in that moment. It's just basic politeness - I wouldn't walk into a bar and yell "have you heard about...", so I'm not doing it here either.

@slothrop CWs don’t do much for me, since people don’t seem to post porn or gore here. If it’s something I don’t want to read, I can quickly tell that and just skip it. But CW or no, it still clutters my timeline. (And yes, apparently you can set up lists to combat this, but I haven’t taken the time.)

@drdirtbag Oh, I meant that if you’re unsure whether to post something (which I understood was your original question), you can always do it behind a CW.
Besides, people absolutely do post porn here. And it’s widely accepted, as long as it’s properly CW’d.

@drdirtbag I try to stay focused on what my profile says my focus is. If you're prone to long rants about why everyone else is wrong about politics and society, just say so in your profile and go nuts.
And then I'll filter most of what you say.
