I was a refugee (and have the paperwork and ptsd to show for it) and you know what? Having to move social platforms can feel similar if there is enough emotional investment (and imho online relationship are not less than offline ones) and not enough of the folks who matter to us who move with us.
Words matter. And so do (subjective) feelings.

@vicgrinberg Thank you for this. So far from I can see, Mastadon users have a particular thorn in their backside against tiktok. I get it you don't like the app, but for a lot of millennials and more, it's a loss of community and info. I know I'm not alone in this, but the access to real news of events around the world felt much more trustworthy and direct compared to any conventional streams of news like ABC/cable networks. You can see the US bias in media in and out of Tiktok. Sucks, truly.

@mycomarcus it's not (just) a tiktok issue. The sentiment was there as part of the big Twitter exodus (back before it was X) & as a rection to people leaving instagram (and I would have mainly seen it as directed towards users of former meta platforms now - at least that's the dominant movement in my Europe-dominates circle).
Not sure it helps former US tiktok folks to know it's not about them but about general language policing that to me rings partially wrong (still, careful with language).

@vicgrinberg true, I get that. I understand people being particular about the language around the issue, especially people using that term refugee. But yeah it's not just an app for alot of people.
The general sentiment/vibe that tiktok seems to agree on in the days before the app closed is that the US gov is only doing so for information and narrative control. I can't say I disagree with those thoughts. Its going to be an interesting couple of weeks soon for sure.

@mycomarcus @vicgrinberg the 1st problem of TikTok is that short videos fry one's brain. Apart from propaganda spread, idiotic vertical screen format, addiction, etc. Discussing pros and cons of TikTok is akin to discussing these of cocaine.

@dimpase @mycomarcus I'd appreciate to not have this discussion in the comments to this particular post. That's not something I have the band pass to read or moderate right now. Thx.
