adventures in maths publishing in commercial journals, part N+1

We wrote https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.18897 - it went through few journals before being taken up by De Gruyter's Special Matrices. (Some) reviews were quite helpful, we improved the text, got some new cute things in along the way. Submitting final version was, however, problematic. They have a LaTeX style file which was last touched in 2017, and it requires LaTeX from 2014 (sic!). After a bit of struggle I gave up and told the journal that they'll need to fix it themselves (after all, they have hefty APCs, all paid by my ex-employer).

Proofs arrived, and, lo and behold, they apparently converted it to Word and then to PDF, rendering all the nice TeX typesetting into crap. I told the editor that this won't do, they have to do it properly (e.g. hiring someone to fix the style file...) #LaTeX

Opened the issue to remove a link to twitter/X on SciPy.org website, and got confronted by people who run SciPy's #twitter account - talking about "neutrality", importance of being apolitical, and how bad Mastodon and Bluesky are doing... 🤮

Laurels of running a science column in a modern Völkischer Beobachter are apparently too nice to part with.

status update: apologies for neglecting this space since late Oct. The excuse: we have moved across the pond (I misspelled it "pont", which (pontus, to be precise) is a Greek word for sea coast)) to the shore of Lake Michigan, to work at Northwestern University, in Greater Chicago.

Main reasons:

NHS won't treat well most acute health problems of our son
the state of education for kids like him in UK is really of collapse
I won't need to claim my somewhat shaky rights for making my job open-ended, with possible fun things such as Employment Tribunal etc

Needless to say, of the 1st 5 weeks, most of the time went into dealing with various bureaucracy (formsss!!! and yes, Social Security Numbers office misspelt my name on the card, and the university tax office put down our citizenships as UK (wrong), etc etc) and, hmm, hardware issues: while most of our possessions are making it over on a ship, I spent time getting and assembling the minimal furniture (yes, we actually bought a house, as rental options are somewhat miserable here), fixing heating (the company who did it needed 10 days, including 5 preliminary visits and aborted attempts).

And new school and doctors for the kid, health insurance, bicycle tire punctures, the bank which is obsessed with security and blocks my card now and then, etc etc.

@christianp it seems that https://mathstodon.xyz/home/ is gone in the web interface? After the upgrade to 4.3 it's forwarded to desk/... with many useless columns (on a desktop/laptop).

Any plans to fix this? Or perhaps there is another way to get what home/ was providing?

In passing I mentioned in a paper

that #ProofAssistant with good certified computer algebra capabilities is not available, nor will be any time soon. And, well, I'm told by a referee either to remove this claim, or provide a reference.

Does anyone know what to cite here?

Booking flights via Schiphol, as both me and my son need new passports, and yes, MinBuZa (Foreign Affairs) completely, totally screwed up the process of replacing passports for non-resident citizens.

(Schiphol Airport has a branch of the local authority citizens' affairs office, so we'll spend the 3 hours transfer window there)

They say they couldn't have predicted a surge in demand, due to 10 year passport validity introduced 10 years ago. Who could have thought? Do they hope that these people decided to give up their NL citizenship en masse?

Instead they tried to outsource the process to a dodgy Dubai-based company, VFS Global, which specialises in getting visas for people. Who could have thought thought that VFS screws up, too?

DP: LS, Wij wonen in VK, en onze paspoorten zijn bijna verlopen. Het lijkt

ons helemaal onmogelijk een afspraak te maken voor nieuwe

paspoortaanvraag, niet  bij de ambassade in Londen ("geen tijdstip

beschikbaar"!) , en niet bij VFS. Nog erger: na invullen van verplicht,

door VFS, formulieren, toch helemaal geen plek bij de 2 locaties in

Londen, of (na opnieuw invullen!) geen plek in Birmingham, of in

Edinburgh.

MinBuZa: Goedendag Dima, mijn naam is Wesley. Dank voor uw bericht en

     excuses voor de verlate reactie. Het spijt mij te horen dat het

     vooralsnog niet is gelukt om een afspraak in te plannen voor een

     paspoortvernieuwing. Wij zijn bekend met het feit dat de afspraken in

     het VK, zowel bij de ambassade als VFS Global zeer beperkt zijn. Hoe

     goed ik uw frustratie ook begrijp, kunnen wij niets veranderen aan het

     feit dat u regelmatig het afsprakensysteem dient te controleren om een

     beschikbare datum en tijd te vinden. Ik hoop van harte dat u spoedig de

     aanvragen kunt indienen.

DP: Geachte Wesley, wat voor ons helemaal niet duidelijk is, tot welke datum

alles bezet is. Wij kunnen ook blij zijn als wij ergens in juni bij de

ambassade of VFS kunnen. Maar zijn alle plekken in juni al bezet? Of

helemaal niet?

Ik ben een (in 2000 genaturaliseerde) Nederlander. Ik woon en werk momenteel

in Oxford, VK. Mijn zoon, een Nederlander van geboorte, en ik, straks

kunnen niet meer naar het buitenland reizen, omdat onze paspoorten lopen

af. Een afspraak voor nieuwe paspoorten maken lukt me al maandenlang (!)

niet.

U heeft onlangs de Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken gevraagd over deze

ontwerp.

Zijn antwoorden (6 maart) waren niet eens zo mooi.

Kortom: "u regelmatig het afsprakensysteem dient te controleren om een

     de computer zitten, knop blijven drukken, in hoop voor een plek...

Ik heb alle berichten, hiermee een verkorte verzameling. U kunt zie daar dat MinBuZa

heeft geen idee over wat VFS Global doet. Ik neem het aan dat VFS toch

wat contractuele verplishtingen heeft, en deze niet nakomt. Lijkt me

hoog tijd voor VFS ontslagen en iets anders doen, heel urgent, nee?
