Toot

I was a refugee (and have the paperwork and ptsd to show for it) and you know what? Having to move social platforms can feel similar if there is enough emotional investment (and imho online relationship are not less than offline ones) and not enough of the folks who matter to us who move with us.

Words matter. And so do (subjective) feelings.

@vicgrinberg I still feel great loss from the demise of the bird site as I knew it. I had formed good relationships there. Many left, stopped posting, vanished. Some moved to other sites. It's not the same. As an autistic man, it was a long struggle to build those friendships and it is lonely without them.

@RegGuy Just wanted to say that I feel sorry you went through it and that I acknowledge your feeling and the courage it took to take the jump.

@vicgrinberg Thank you. I left the day before musky took over. I joined Mastodon a few weeks later. I have jumped around servers and finally settled here with my pseudonym rather than my real name, as I did on the bird site and here initially. Not sure it's necessary or not, but here I am...

@vicgrinberg it's interesting to have seen the policing of language around refugee... I think you're the first person to talk emotional costs to social (media) movements

@Nikkileah yeah, I'm seeing takes on this with each wave and every time it annoys me to no end.

To some people the emotional cost is, for various reasons, immense and soil-crushing and has all kinds of reverberations in their life beyond social media.

@vicgrinberg Thank you for this. So far from I can see, Mastadon users have a particular thorn in their backside against tiktok. I get it you don't like the app, but for a lot of millennials and more, it's a loss of community and info. I know I'm not alone in this, but the access to real news of events around the world felt much more trustworthy and direct compared to any conventional streams of news like ABC/cable networks. You can see the US bias in media in and out of Tiktok. Sucks, truly.

@mycomarcus it's not (just) a tiktok issue. The sentiment was there as part of the big Twitter exodus (back before it was X) & as a rection to people leaving instagram (and I would have mainly seen it as directed towards users of former meta platforms now - at least that's the dominant movement in my Europe-dominates circle).

Not sure it helps former US tiktok folks to know it's not about them but about general language policing that to me rings partially wrong (still, careful with language).

@vicgrinberg true, I get that. I understand people being particular about the language around the issue, especially people using that term refugee. But yeah it's not just an app for alot of people.

The general sentiment/vibe that tiktok seems to agree on in the days before the app closed is that the US gov is only doing so for information and narrative control. I can't say I disagree with those thoughts. Its going to be an interesting couple of weeks soon for sure.

@mycomarcus @vicgrinberg the 1st problem of TikTok is that short videos fry one's brain. Apart from propaganda spread, idiotic vertical screen format, addiction, etc. Discussing pros and cons of TikTok is akin to discussing these of cocaine.

@vicgrinberg i understand the sentiment. That said im afraid as someone who works everyday on international refugees, no, moving social media is nothing like having your life and family destroyed and torn apart, losing your home and being persecuted, fearing for your life and then being treated like absolute trash and mistrust by a host country.

@vicgrinberg that's very generous and compassionate of you. I was a regular user of the platform. I formed a community and learned a lot. @Ftfyphilosophy this sentiment comes up and up again and it felt wrong when I came over from twitter and had a major breakdown over it and the state of the world and it feels wrong when I see others being met with the same statement of "your feelings are not valid". Some use the words carelessly and for some this is the right word because of the impact it has.

And I'm sorry for your loss of community. This place has it's quirks, but there is also a lot of hope and learning and just fun here!

@vicgrinberg I agree with your position, I am NOT a refugee, but I think people can feel connected to refugees when they have semi-similar crisis of community.

Despite that I do believe a majority of TikTok users are using "refugee" as a meme/exaggeration and juxtaposition against the very real issues irl refugees go through and because its a protest against censorship by the government.

I think most people saying it haven't put much thought into it and are riding the meme/protest.

@YourShadowDani which is well possible. But I've seen the same sentiment being said again and again and again (back when I was one of the twitter wave coming over myself and repeatedly since then) and every time in grates a lot more than someone using the word "refugee" without a deep understanding of what it means to be one grates. So I do feel the need to emphasise the other view (first time I feel grounded enough here to actually do it).
