I can't stop thinking about Behavioral Addictions right now
In the last 10 years we created a generation of young people with behavioral addictions. I think the media's "young people these days" articles are about the consequences of growing up with behavioral addictions.

We viscerally understand the disadvantages of a child bound to a wheelchair, or other disability, but behavioral addictions robs a child of their youth, the ability to put time into the things that lead to career growth and will let them escape poverty after age 20.
I lived more or less in poverty from highschool to my second job.

If I was the living embodiment of the "Far Side" comic where parents were imagining a newspaper want ad full of ads looking for people to "Save the Princess for $$$"--then I would have stalled out at $45k salary (in an expensive part of the world)

Anyhow, my thinking is influence by this video covering the video game addiction problem in China, Korea and Japan and what the government have done there to attempt to address it.
Feed your own behavioral addiction and watch it.

@mistersql “gamification” has increasingly been feeling like our generation’s leaded gasoline. There are so many huge companies trying to build addiction cycles in every aspect of life. Another scary one is the way sports betting has boomed since NJ started the legalization trend, and now it’s basically a running joke about how much money young men owe DraftKings.

@mistersql In my experience (or where we live right now), children who do have video games are already not part of the poor social class. Also it might be hard to not confuse correlation and causality - do you have a personality tending to addiction? Then you also might consume media excessive and you might have trouble later on. Btw, my mother needed to read books secretly since her parents said all these novels will make her stupid and her eyes bad...

@demiurg In Asia 60% of children game 1.5 hours a day weekdays and 3 hours a day weekends. That implies 2/3 of people have addictive personalities and isn't a problem of just an unlucky minority. Yes, rich parents helps, but maybe not if they kid blows $50,000 gambling on loot boxes in his 20s or if they graduate to working retail.
Discouraging reading seems like a distinct phenomena.

@mistersql It seems much less than average US consumption times. I think doing something on a regular basis does not imply addiction. If so, I must be addicted to work 😱 It might be we have a different understanding of addictive behavior. I think there is also a difference in what games one playes. Our kid has some games, that teach basic arithmetic. He loves it and has straight A grades in his courses - but again it could be he just is good in math (he is) and likes these games therefore.

@demiurg The reaction against addictive games are not 1850's moralizing about everything that isn't hard labor (no dancing! no card games!), it is about games with the same game mechanics of Vegas slot machines- either monetized with actual money (Fortnight Skins, Loot Boxes) or monetized by ads to convince your parents to buy stuff. Mathblaster is not being played like it was a part time job.

@demiurg I hate it when I leave a "not" out of a sentence. Worst sort of typo ever.

@mistersql Yeah, here I fully agree. Some game mechanics really do force addiction and problematic behavior. Worst is, when they are deeply integrated in titles that target young kids! Parents must be very careful but I do understand that a lot of people don't care or don't know. But you are right, the gaming landscape is a mine field.
