Toot

EDIT: Thank you everyone! This was awesome advice. We're going with LibreSprite for now, looks like it fits their present needs. They are also so grateful to all of you! And the additional tangential suggestions for related software for maps and color, etc., are all going to be helpful :)

My kid makes games with #Godot. They are looking for a good tool for making 2D #PixelArt and #sprite and #spritesheet for their games.

Recommendations, please! ✨

@revoluciana I think Aseprite is pretty great for those things.

@Toad64 @revoluciana aseprite is unsurpassed but not free* - but there is a demo (can't save?) if you want to try before you buy. My 9 year old son uses it sometimes and has no complaints.

@shyra @revoluciana I'd second LibreSprite (though I tend to use Aseprite) It's a delightful tool highly specialized for pixel art.

And depending on if they struggle with this aspect of game dev like I do, I'd also recommend learning how to import color palettes from LoSpec since that can drastically aid in creating a coherent visual style with significantly less artistic

experience.

Also of note, Lospec has a ton of resources available on the same website to help learning artists hone their skills. I've certainly perused their resources many times on the occasion I choose to make a pixel art game.

@revoluciana another option that's free is Piskel, which you can use in your browser. https://www.piskelapp.com/

@revoluciana Aseprite is the most widely used, I think. It's paid. Found on aseprite.org

Pixelorama is pretty good too (and free), and it may pique their interest to know that it is also made with Godot! Found here: https://orama-interactive.itch.io/pixelorama
