What are the pros of having a Pixelfed account when you already have a Mastodon account? Stories? The reason I don't have Pixelfed is that I have Mastodon. But I'm intrigued.

@rolle I think Pixelfed is good if you like posting pictures. Mastodon lets you upload no more than 4 images on any post and it heavily compresses & shrinks them. Fine for a snap of your cat looking cute but not so good if you want to share your carefully-thought-out awesome photo or a picture of some artwork that took you weeks to draw.

You can follow them, they can follow you.

That's the whole point.

@rolle my thought exactly. But I made an account just to see the difference. IG style user experience, quite minimalist still (MVP). Text toots won't get shown, only images with or without text. Kinda feels like yet an other mastodon app which only shows images. So probably better for those who only are keen on images and piece of mind :).

@rolle instagram was an app to see what and how people I know are doing, like FB at the beginning. Problem with #pixelfed is it's just stream of random peoples random images, the social aspect is missing. So to me it just feels like stream of useless info which internet is full of. It would be interesting if there were familiar people. But not yet. At this point it feels like googling for random images.

@rolle

Collections and Portfolio features are good if you want to have some curated images up on your profile, semi-permanently. On Mastodon, you have to keep reposting them.

Obviously more focused on image content.

Also, if you want to self-host, Pixelfed is less demanding.

@rolle For me?

Instagram import and possibility to post more photos in 1 post.

Stories? Not so much.

It's a good question to ask though - I've been thinking about the pros/cons of pixelfed/mastodon vs for instance sharkey & co.

For now the development of mastodon is nice and stable, pixelfed has the archive of my instagram photos (and new photos to come), but the other *verse applications? Too tempting if another one with combined specs get a very stable release process.

@rolle i seldom use pixelfed, but it makes sense to have a web page collecting even the pictures i posted one year ago.

And you can view them even without a fediverse account.

I have 70 posts there against tens on thousands of posts i made on multiple microblogging instances.

I don't like that PixelFed wants me to have a separate account.

@rolle One thing Mastodon doesn’t have that I would really like to have for something more picture-based is the ability to move your old posts with you when you move to a new instance.

For mostly text-based posts this might even be an undesirable feature. Not every word needs to be remembered, and even with Mastodon you can backup your posts. But if you want people to be able to find something or everything you said 15 years ago, you need to make some effort, and considering what stupid things people say, this might actually be a good thing.

With photos the best balance between the bliss of forgetting and the wish to remember is maybe more in favor of the remembering.
