Today @alexisbushnell shared jaz-michael king’s https://mastodon-near.me, which arranges local Mastodon instances on a map. I feel some bittersweet validation, as no city or region in the North of England is represented - could addressing this gap help local communities to organise, post-enshittification? https://www.patreon.com/posts/find-mastodon-by-119910371

@zoy that's a really great point actually, would more local instances encourage people to try Mastodon or other Fedi platforms?
I can see it helping convince maybe those who frequent local Facebook groups and location specific social media like that but would love to hear if it'd affect others choices.
I'm absolutely sure that @jaz has some thoughts about this!

@alexisbushnell @jaz Yes! This was on my mind because I recently wrote about my experiences with Facebook - so many communities are dependent on it for info about local events, but it no longer functions for organisers as a way to reach people. @zoy @alexisbushnell Lastly, we need Groups.
I want to be in the Cymru group, the Moderators group, and the pretty pictures of snow group. Oh and the Defaidodon group. I do not want to join a server and create a new identity for each of these.
People need to be able to group up and share what's relevant to them, irrespective of their service provider.

@alexisbushnell @zoy @jaz @robin I'm doubtful of this because we've had over a decade of local community eroding social media services.
