Feeling pretty miserable right now due to a flare up, but seeing $1 trillion if ill-gotten wealth get destroyed by open source software really takes the edge off. If only they could bottle this feeling.

​Today I used Dotgrid and Inkscape to make a pattern out of the "sheep" and "measure" characters, for my #shavian transcription blog background. I think it's pretty cute!

The obvious thing that comes to mind is Facebook events, 15+ years ago - in fact, this was the feature that broke me and made me create a Facebook account in the first place as an undergrad. That's not really functional or appealing anymore, for several reasons that we're all familiar with.

I've found some cool looking projects in the works such as @mobilizon and @gancio but I don't quite have the level of technical ability required to get an instance running.

I feel like I need some kind of community calendar for online events. I only know about my friends' Zoom performances etc. if I see their own posts about it. There isn't a place I can go to specifically see a list of events created or shared by people I like. Seems like a very simple thing, am I missing something very obvious that serves this purpose?

This is interesting from an accessibility perspective. I've been learning how to do integrated audio description in my writing, and it's super not easy. Sometimes the best way is to embrace its weirdness, rather than trying to blend it into the dialogue. Figuring out what conceit for AD best fits the voice and aesthetic of a show is a significant piece of work, but also a lot of fun!

Netflix does usually have an AD track available for visually impaired users, which happens to also helpful when multitasking. Imagine if they invested in quality and creativity of AD, and promoted its use to viewers who don't consider themselves to have an access need - what interesting new opportunities would that open up for writers, actors, and sound engineers?

Yesterday was my graduation ceremony, a year after my Viva and just over ten years after I enrolled. I welled up a little when the Vice Chancellor said that a PhD means you have “done something that nobody else has ever done before”.

I've almost finished my first notebook for practising #shavian, and I think next I want to start a mini-site for transliterations of poems and prose excerpts (short, say <500 words). I'd like to have a bit of fun with styling, and I'd also like people to be able to subscribe through ActivityPub.

What's the right tool to use for this?

Extra challenge: I don't know how to self-host. I know how to install something in a VM terminal, but I don't understand how that becomes a website.

I'm making an online interactive queer sci-fi show for folks who have limited access to in-person venues (e.g. because theatres aren't doing anything about COVID) and we have a performance tomorrow evening. I've been pretty lax about promoting it because I got sick, so we have very few registrations. I would be really grateful if you could share this with folks who might get something out of it. Personally, seeing live online art makes me feel a lot less alone, and I hope to offer that to others.

Working towards the online performance on Thursday evening of "Is Society in the Room with us Now?" It's a rough and last-minute affair because a couple of us haven't been well, myself included (not to mention my good computer, which is totally unresponsive).

After an afternoon of meetings and correspondence, in a final stolen hour at 9pm, I finally managed to assemble some footage for a pre-recorded video segment. Tomorrow I hope to make some final additions to the script, and watch the recording of the rehearsal that I was too unwell to attend last week.

I also made marmalade, and one of the jars exploded. Thankfully I was out of the blast radius.

I'm exploring the possibility of including livecoded audio and visuals in the next episode of @intrapology, but it's been a few years since I really engaged with the scene. I'd love to hear what's been exciting people recently. What should I be exploring?

@tidalcycles is my comfort zone, but I'm hoping to use something that does visuals at the same time - I'm sure I remember learning years ago about something that does this.

I'm running into an issue with my software / interface / web design being perceived as "retro", when that's not exactly what I'm going for. I want to imagine a future in which we make our existing devices run better, rather than replacing everything every few years. It's not about evoking the past, it's about imagining a more expansive present. It's frustrating to make anti-capitalist art, and then have it interpreted as nostalgia for old products of corporations.
