Ok, stupid question, can you get #pixelfed to autopost to your #mastodon account ?

@BigG How do you mean? Like crossposting?

@BigG But why as both networks are federated, so anyone on Mastodon can follow your Pixelfed account and comment and like. Otherwise it would duplicate with two posts in the Fediverse.

@danie10 @BigG If you want to see your Pixelfed posts in your own Mastodon timeline, you can follow your Pixelfed account from your Mastodon timeline. All Pixelfed posts made after that will show up in your Mastodon timeline (but not any you have already made).

You can then, if you wish, boost any of those posts and your Mastodon followers will see them (just like any other boosted post).

I'm not sure if that is what you had in mind.

@alan @danie10 thanks. I guess what I was wanting to do was to post deom my pixelfed account, and then my mastodon followers would also see it. Like i said. Stupid question. Did not think it though. Thanks for the reply though.

@BigG @alan @danie10 Valid question, BigG! Yeah, it's another "fedi" server, but that doesn't mean all your Masto followers will automatically go and follow your Pixelfed account. I think Alan's suggestion is a good one, because by manually boosting your Pixelfed posts, your Masto followers will then see them, and can decide to follow that account or not. The challenge comes in as to when to STOP boosting them, because if enough of your Masto followers go and follow your Pixelfed account, they'll see dups if you keep boosting posts. Decisions decisions.

@leoncowle

That's a fair point. So far, my experience has been that not many people follow both my accounts. I do have Mastodon followers on Pixelfed, but they seem to be people who came across me via hashtags, or maybe as followers of followers, but not direct Mastodon followers. So I probably won't stop manually boosting at least some photos.

(And I agree it's not a stupid question at all, these things are not obvious and I'm still not sure if I am really doing this right!)

@alan @leoncowle @danie10 @uastronomer thanks for the comment. I guess I asked it before I really started looking into the Pixelfed app. I downloaded it but had not posted anything yet. So now the question is different. Looking at my mastodon client (Tusky) I can post text and/or images. However using the Pixelfed app, I can only post Pictures (with a description of course). So it is more limited than Mastodon, based on a subset of functionality. So the thing I am missing is, why, if i have a Mastodon account, why would I also want a Pixelfed account, or even better, why would I want a Pixelfed account over a Mastodon account. Is it because PF is likely to attract a different type of user ?

@BigG

Right, Pixelfed is intended for posting pictures.

Some reasons for using Pixelfed might be:

@BigG

Having said all that, you shouldn't feel you are missing out on something if you don't use Pixelfed. If none of the above reasons is a big deal for you, it's fine to participate in the Fediverse via Mastodon only.

@BigG why would you need/want to do that? 🤔

It's a Fediverse software so people on Mastodon can just follow your Pixelfed account.

No, that wasn't a stupid question.

How are you supposed to understand the Fediverse if you don't ask?
