Toot

One thing I've noticed in gaming forums is if a player's struggling with a particular part of the game (e.g. making several timed jumps in quick succession), the reaction is often 'well you're just not very good then / sounds like a skill issue', rather than maybe the game is a bit too difficult or perhaps some people just want to enjoy playing the game rather than suffering a challenge (I play most games on the lowest difficulty for this reason).

For example, I don't think I've ever beaten any of the Civilization games on anything other than the lowest difficulty level, even though I've played them for about 30 years. Part of this is because I enjoy aggressive rapid expansion (building lots of cities) and that doesn't seem to be the best strategy at higher levels. Am I unskilled? Maybe, but I've paid for the game and want to enjoy it.

@pwaring Afaik, building wide (many smaller cities rather than few massive ones) is still the optimal strategy in the recent civ games. But there a lot of important details related to city placement and management and AI exploitation (critical at higher difficulty levels) that I'm not really qualified to explain.

I can recommend watching a few videos (at least early game) of players that are both good at the game and explain their thought process. e.g. https://youtube.com/user/PotatoMcWhiskey

@pwaring ultimately, I believe that in case of Civ specifically, each new iteration of the game is primarily designed for players that have gotten really good at the previous one and are looking for new challenges either in the form of extra complexity or novel twists on existing mechanics

@pwaring i think there is a slightly improving trend. Resident Evil 4 (ancient now) makes Boss fights easier if you continue after dying. The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn let you switch difficulty mid game (bit tedious and i've never done it); and Horizon Zero Dawn in particular has a Story Mode (I've not played it, but it says it makes combat considerably easy so you can spend time on story and exploration).

@pwaring i think "i paid for it, i want to play the whole game" should be a consideration that overrides any demands that the player achieve certain skill levels (in made-up skills).
