Um, nerds please tell me what I am looking for to set up a basic gaming system for our teens while they spend several weeks sequestered in Canada.

I thought I could just, like, buy a Nintendo console. lol.

like if people want to play Legend of Zelda on the tv how do we do that? Things have become totally inscrutable in the last decade for those of us who were not following along. Which I was not.

Our teens do have nintendo switch, though we have to replace one of their consoles (water damage). I have no idea what Switch has to do with any of this though. 😬

@jnl Oh I was going to tell you to get a Nintendo Switch if they wanted to play Zelda haha They can hook that up on the TV :)

@stephanie I should probably just ask said teens. Though if people think geeks on Masto talk to posters unnecessarily rudely you should see how our teens address their parents re: tech issues

@jnl Hahah teens can be harsh. But yeah, I would ask them "what do you need?" and let them make you a written list (or an Amazon cart; you don't have to buy from there, but you'll be sure to get the right stuff!)

@jnl @stephanie as long as the switch has detachable controllers (not a switch Lite) - it should have come with a Dock that has an HDMI out port so it should easily attach to the tv with a matching cable. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22372/kw/Switch%20dock

@jnl@hcommons.social Switch is the current Nintendo console. You shouldn't buy one, they are like hours away from announcing the Switch 2 and it would be better to buy that one. If you're looking for a bargain, buying a (current) Switch after the Switch 2 is announced could be a good idea.

@jnl you can literally just buy a Nintendo Switch, and whatever dock or cable you need to plug it into an HDMI port on the TV… or, what am I missing?

@jnl haha, I actually have a spare ps4 pro you can have if you want! You can’t play, like, Nintendo games on it though, so Zelda/mario/Pokémon/Splatoon are out. Everything else though!

(This is a serious offer if you’re interested)

@jnl there are gaming sticks that connect to the HDMI port of your tv and pack a bunch of emulators and roms. They are small, cheap, and convenient. They also come with passable wireless controllers. They handle 2D retro games pretty well, but they struggle with some 3D stuff.

@jnl you'll need a console (playstation, xbox, switch, steam deck), likely an hdmi cable to attach to the TV, and some games. Games can be downloaded mostly. Newer consoles are dropping disc drives (or available at extra cost), so no more physical media. steam deck would be entirely digital.

likely the kids know what they want
