'I can let things go that mostly drain me. It is fine to say no thank you when that's what I mean. It is not my job on this earth or in any community to be all things to all people. If something is extremely urgent and ours to do, a right-sized piece is enough for me to own.'

I can go stand somewhere by myself with a TINY RIOT sign

and then get put in prison for the rest of my life or whatever while wide swaths of America mock their neighbors and cheer repression

The weirdest thing today is feeling like we should DO something. Like, omg why is this happening, someone make it stop.

Which I totally get, but then I keep remembering we tried. We have all been trying.

I did not choose this train wreck and if I knew how to stop it I already would have done that thing.

This is extremely terrible. For all of us. It just bodes so poorly.

"Oh did we actually end up buying a house in Canada?" -- my teenager, a few minutes ago, as spoken while waiting to board a flight at YUL.

Clearly this has all been troubling him greatly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Border crossing was apparently lightning fast. Canada-US relations holding strong. 😂

I am pretty much screaming because 1. the border crossing is usually a mess on Friday nights and they have a 3.5 hour drive even without that, for an 8 p.m. flight with luggage 2. the US-Canada crossing situation doesn't seem fabulous right now and our visas allow us to STAY, not to ENTER, and 3. The house situation here is still fairly chaotic and I have to make it so the kids have places to sleep 😱

I would guess we are T minus 1 year out from a post in The Conversation in which a social scientist and a medical researcher VERY EARNESTLY act like they are DISCOVERING AND RESPONSIBLY DISCLOSING that SOMETIMES vaccines ACTUALLY CAN CAUSE HARM. It will be LITERALLY WHAT WE HAVE KNOWN SINCE THE 60s, at scale, when it was previously used to bolster vax educational programs and funding for those harmed (again VAERS) so that society could care for its victims while also keeping all of us as safe as possible with herd immunity. THIS TIME IT WILL BE USED TO FURTHER WEAKEN THE CONSENSUS THAT VACCINES ARE NEEDED and upon its publication I will become an incandescent malevolent ether floating above the land

My own kid was vaccine injured. Yes, it's the kid with autism. No, his injury was not autism. He had status epilepticus, uncontrolled days-long seizure episode requiring hospitalization. It is a rare but not at all unheard of side effect from DTAP.

Guess what dealing with it was a total nightmare, about 10% of which was the med issue and 90% of which was HOW COMPLETELY STUPID EVERYONE HAS BECOME ABOUT THIS STUFF.

Large scale policies always, always harm some people at the margin.

We literally ask those people to suck it up and deal, and for all of us to throw in with the lottery for the greater good.

That's how society works.

You don't have to make it worse by pretending that vaccines are perfect and that harm doesn't happen, however.

That turns a liberal society lottery into something more like Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery."

Calm down. Use brain. Stop flattening everything.

I will just go ahead and say the thing: vaccine injuries do exist. People get injured by vaccines every year, in significant numbers. We used to know and understand this, AND EVEN WITH KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING THIS, we also used to have a much more static consensus that vaccines = good. The idiocy on the right seems to have demanded idiocy on the left in equal measure to stay balanced and now we all seem committed to no one understanding anything.

Statistically certainly, some people will become ill, be injured, and usually a few will even die due to any large-scale vax campaign. YOU ARE CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING THIS, I SWEAR TO GOD.

IT'S JUST THAT EVEN. MORE. PEOPLE. will die, be sickened, and be injured WITHOUT VACCINES. By a HUGE FACTOR.

We choose the greater good. We compensate those harmed (this is why VAERS exists, y'all and now not even doctors understand it).

This is the covenant of living in liberal society.

Which we now don't.

So instead we have idiocy all around.

I normally don't wade in on vaccine stuff because I am both HUGELY pro-vax and ALSO hugely discouraged and deeply annoyed by how flat and stupid the left insists on making the discourse. With that as caveat

YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY GET THE FLU IF YOU HAVE HAD THE FLU VAX. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS DO. IT IS NOT PREVENTATIVE. IT IS AMELIORATIVE. And even then it depends on vax-to-strain match.

Thank you.

Our teens do have nintendo switch, though we have to replace one of their consoles (water damage). I have no idea what Switch has to do with any of this though. 😬

like if people want to play Legend of Zelda on the tv how do we do that? Things have become totally inscrutable in the last decade for those of us who were not following along. Which I was not.

Um, nerds please tell me what I am looking for to set up a basic gaming system for our teens while they spend several weeks sequestered in Canada.

I thought I could just, like, buy a Nintendo console. lol.

I want a tv (here in Newfoundland) that is wall mountable, large enough for family movie nights, and keeps surveillance and spyware nonsense to an absolute minimum. What should we get?
