@fancysandwiches oooh, please talk more about the kinds of things and places you want to record. (Like many good questions, the answer is “it depends”)

@briandorsey the one very specific thing that I know I want to record are the 17 year cicadas that are going to emerge in my area this year. Other than that I am not exactly sure, but probably birdsong, and just random noises.

Other than the Cicadas the primary motivation is to use various found sounds in my sampler (Digitakt 2).

@fancysandwiches oh yea! So cicadas are sooooo loud, you definitely don’t have to worry about self noise specs or anything. :) It mostly gets challenging when you start trying to record quiet nature soundscapes and such. Any of those recorders will do well with loud ambiences and sampling things up close.

@briandorsey thank you for confirming. I spent several hours looking into this and that seemed correct to me, but also I know that I'm barely scratching the surface with what I've learned so far.

@fancysandwiches I do like the idea that the H5 has interchangeable capsules. As the previous comment noted, it does depend on what you're recording.

Also, if you're outside, a muff is important to keep the wind noise out.

@jacobyaudio definitely planning on getting a muff for whatever I end up using, because I am planning on recording the periodical cicadas this year. Other than cicadas, probably some birdsong, and various found sounds to be used in my sampler (Digitakt 2).

@fancysandwiches I’d recommend to use a Zoom F3 with a pair of LOM Usi Pro.

@fancysandwiches DO NOT BUY THE DR40X!! It has zero shielding, and you will end up with phone interference. If you want to handhold the recorder, consider a used Sony PCM-D100 if you can find one, or an H5/H6. The Zoom essential series does give you 32bit float which can be nice. If you can spare the cash, get a used Sound Devices MixPre, but of course then you're using external mics. Best sound, very flexible routing, and it's a mixer.

@SteveDuncan awesome thanks for all the info 👍. The Sony PCM-D100 certainly looks ideal, but I can't find a used model in my budget. Anything that requires external mics is also kind of a deal breaker, at least for now.
