hey, uh, so maybe don't use @protonprivacy

because apparently Elon Musk hand-picking funding bills doesn't count as corporate control :blobfoxdisapprove:

EDIT: In case anyone thinks that Proton has a point here, let's clear something up. Yes, the Democrats are bought and paid for by corporations. But it's also the Democrats who installed Lina Khan, pushed for Net Neutrality, and passed the Affordable Care Act. Yes, Biden forced the railroad workers to stop striking, but then the administration continued to lobby on behalf of the workers and got them the sick days they were fighting for. It's also Biden's DOJ that pushed for the breakup of Google, even if it was Trump's DOJ that started the probe. Do you really think Trump's DOJ would break up a monopoly like Biden's has attempted to? Also gestures vaguely at Lina Khan everything that woman did was incredible, from fighting monopolies, to bringing down the cost of medicine, to promoting the rights of workers. Meanwhile it's the Republicans and Trump who installed a Verizon executive to repeal Net Neutrality, stripped the FTC of its authority to govern labor, installed the Supreme Court who revoked the Chevron Deference, and is now letting Elon Musk pick and choose budget legislation.

Anyone who thinks the Democrats and Republicans are the same on this are so hilariously wrong, it'd be funny if it wasn't so sad. Nuance needs to make a comeback in 2025.

Also edited to tag the Proton I'm talking about here so people know I'm talking about the bad Proton and not the Linux compatibility layer. We love you Valve :blobfoxheartcute:

Welp, looks like they deleted their pro-Trump replies. I'm curious if they're going to address it or try to sweep it under the rug. I'm also curious if this was due to the social media backlash or if there were enough people cancelling their subscriptions that it made them nervous.

I'm not sure if Proton's management is just unaware of how pro-corporate and anti-consumer/anti-labor Trump is (which, like, how?) or if they really are just that into fascism, but I still won't be recommending Proton's services to anyone unless they actively walk this rhetoric back.

@martinlentink Saying that the Republicans are somehow less corporate controlled than the Democrats is completely idiotic. Trump increased the US deficit by trillions of dollars to increase taxes on the poorest Americans while cutting taxes for the richest Americans. Trump has had Elon Musk literally dictating our budget and spending. Trump installed corporate leaders into the FTC, the FCC, and the FDA.

Like, yes, the Democrats are bought and paid for. But the Republicans literally hand over every position of power within the government to corporations.

@Rusty wtf are they talking about, the Biden admin has overseen one of the best DOJs for antitrust since I was a kid.

This is pure fiction. Trump "pursued antitrust" in the sense that he got mad at tech companies whenever they were rude to him. And immediately flip-flopped as soon as they were nice. That's why they're donating shit to him, because they know he's manipulable and can make their problems go away.

@Rusty In as much as politicians make disingenuous statements for their own purposes, so do corporates in order to pursue their own interests. What the Proton account is saying here is written for an audience, and is written for a purpose. The audience and purpose can be guessed at for now, but the focus on Democrats in respect of an issue that is bi-partisan (corporate capture) is a red flag.

Whether or not the company is looking to endorse fascism is, in my view, open to question for now. Like many others have said, it would be so antithetical to the foundational philosophy of the company to do this, that I would be surprised if this is their explicit goal. Nonetheless it will be worth keeping an eye on in the short term, to observe the direction of travel.

For someone like me with limited knowledge, I have to rely on paying for a produce like Proton. I can't build and maintain my own server. If Proton abandons its core mission in pursuit of... whatever else it is they want, then I will be stuck for other choices in respect of an email provider.

@XfoxAD I'd argue that their CEO openly endorsing a fascist then using the company's advertising arm to openly endorse that fascist is, well, the company endorsing fascism. The only service Proton offers that I don't think has a good alternative is their cloud backup solution, as there aren't a lot of encrypted options to choose from. If you want to keep using Proton because you don't see any good alternative, I'm not really going to fault you for that. Every tech company is basically kissing Trump's ring right now, and self-hosting is a big barrier to entry for a lot of people, so the options are definitely limited. But let's call a spade a spade here, Proton is openly endorsing a fascist and using the money users pay them to do so.

@odoben I never really understood the benefit. You're still trusting Proton not to scan them before they encrypt them, and having them encrypted adds a lot of overhead like not being able to use SMTP/POP3/IMAP endpoints without spinning up your own server locally to talk to their proprietary endpoints. I guess it's nice if hackers get into the service, but it never seemed much better than just deleting your emails from the server after they've been delivered to you and encrypting them locally. :meowshrug:

@patches @Lildeer I've been doing it for years so I might be a little biased, but I think it's pretty easy. You just have to find a domain registrar (I use Namecheap but I'm sure there are better ones that the nerds here will tell you about. Don't use GoDaddy.) then just buy the domain you want. From there, you can go to the Fastmail settings and add the domain, and when you do that Fastmail will link you a guide on how to point your new domain at it from whichever registrar you picked.

@Zordrak @protonprivacy To put it bluntly, I don't care what country someone is in, if they don't know that Trump is a corporate-bought fascist then they're either lying or willfully ignorant. Endorsing Trump for being anti-corporate would be like me endorsing the AfD for making Germany an open and inclusive place, or tipping my hat to the Tories for bringing about greater British and European unity. While I could have told you in 2016 that Trump wouldn't stand by anything he said and would bring the country backwards, I do kind of understand the desire back then to have a political outsider with promises to rebuke the system. There is, however, absolutely no excuse in 2025.
