I've had good experiences with Flatpak, so I'm not against the idea of containers.

I just found Docker in particular horribly annoying to work with. But this was a long time ago.

Should I be using Docker/Podman containers for local services that I run?

I'm not talking about building containers, I mean, am I going to get very annoyed very quickly if I install Docker on a local machine and use it to run stuff?

Back in my software developer days, I went heavy into Docker during a job where we split apart a monorepo into separate microservices.

And tbh, the whole experience kind of put me off of Docker entirely. This was a long time ago, and I was in the weeds about sharing network configurations and building images and sharing filesystems and containerizing databases.. so things are maybe, presumably, better?

What have I missed in the years since I went "well this sucks" and stopped using it?

Haio, quick heads up! UwU If you make a bedside power outlet and you put blue leds in it, you are going to hell when you die. Just so you know.

I know not to get running wheels for rats that are too small - even the ones sold in pet shops (a wheel with too small of a diameter can give them back pawblems).

How big a wheel would I need, and does anypony on fediverse have experience finding one or (even better) making one on a budget? Do your rats like it?

I don't trust the websites I'm looking at, too much AI slop and conflicting answers.

I remember 16 inches being the minimum?

Petting is really good, but have you tried biting the hand that pets you really hard?

It makes the pets even better, and they love it <3

I think the funniest thing that could happen with this would be for a blind furry that is extremely into vore to join the fediverse, and run into my alt text and be like, "holy shit it's like it was made for- ...oh. oh, but I'm endo only, actually."

"What's your social media strategy, foxyoreos?"

Horny alt text, mostly.

"..does that work?"

Well, but it's the principle.

I don't know if there actually is such a thing as a blind feral-furry-fatal-vore-disposal-fetish demographic.

But if there is, I plan to fucking corner it. <3

What are the current standards for RSS authentication in terms of client support? Do most clients support a login? Or is best practice to still generate a per-user token for the URL?

Your fingerprints are all over everything you make. The proportions, what you struggle with, what you don't struggle with, the way your art changes over time, the tiny details you notice, the subtleties of how your lines wobble.

That's what everypony cares about. They don't care about whether you got the shadows right. They care about having a connection to you and sharing something with you and seeing something that you care about.

I know some furries fall back on AI because they worry about art skill, and the thing about AI is that it's not bad because you're "shortcutting" art, it's bad because it defeats the purpose of art.

The point of art is communicative. It says something about you. It shares an idea in a way that words can't.

Your crappiest artwork is already enough if it does that. Fuck gatekeeping, be proud of the things you draw.

There are many open platforms and software sources where using them isn't just healthier, it's a better experience than the closed platforms.

We are not there with messaging.

Like.. I know I'm over-simplifying. I get it. I understand that what Signal and Matrix are doing is hard.

But it does feel pretty bad to have somepony who was really nice go very far out of their way to help accommodate me, and then the experience they had was that they had to wonder if I was ghosting them.

That's their reward for taking the time to read my notes and figure out what platforms I'm on, they get ghosted because Matrix doesn't work.

Okay, rant aside, it's fine, it's not like I'm leaving Matrix, but I am going to need to put a warning next to it that it might not work.

This is frustrating because I carried on multi-day conversation with somepony, who then had to contact me elsewhere and say "hey, did you not see my messages or is something wrong with Matrix?"

And.. I just finished encouraging critters to use other services than Telegram/Discord. And now I kind of feel bad about it.

It is the year 2024. I am worried that if somepony wants to send me money, they will not be able to.

It is the year 2025. I am worried that if somepony wants to send me a message, they will not be able to.

It is the year 2026. I am worried that if somepony visits a website..

It would be so great if the Internet could get better instead of worse.

I am willing to tolerate a lot of bullshit to use an open messenger.

I also am not on Telegram or Discord. If you're losing me as a proponent, you are doing something wrong.

The bar is so fucking low. You just have to work. Everything else can be shit, as long as you deliver messages.

That's the bar you're failing at?

By the way, Signal, I am also looking at you right now when I say that.

I would like messaging services to work, please.
