I think the core problem with many of the MMORPG that went from subscription over to a free-to-play model... is that they all ended up doing an enshitification pass. Some of these were worse than others... but they all added weird monetization or locked core features behind paywalls. Now years later... we only have a worse version of the game that launched as the one that is still playable.

@belghast the one thing I remember from my time in lotro was how every single button would hit you up for money
steam says i played for 84 hours and i remember nothing else.
dunno what my point is, but that seems Bad

@owls the one that will always stand out in my mind... is how SWTOR locked away the ability to recolor your cosmetics behind a paywall
Then there is Hellgate London a game I loved at launch... and is a poorly puppeted corpse in its current version by the Korean company that bought it and pay-to-winned the fuck out of it.

@belghast I don’t mind (and currently do) pay an MMO subscription for this very reason.

@jgayfer yeah it feels like a more honest model. Paying for access seems cleaner.

@belghast
Free-to-play/Freemium was the single worst thing that happened to MMOs IMO.
When everything started being designed to earn cash or sell content, everything started feeling tarnished.
This is what concerns me about ESO's move from chapters to seasons. Just feels like Micro$oft wanting to wring the players for more cash.
