@marcoarment You talk about nerds vs. Big Tech. But Big Tech is populated by nerds. The people creating Facebook/Google/Apple are as nerdy as you are. You’re not two separate tribes. You're not nerdier than them.
The distinction between indie and corporate developers is significant, but that's not actually tribal either. If the side gig pays off, those people might become indies (as John & Casey did!). When the indie gig putters out, developers take corporate jobs. It's not genetic, and it's not inherent identity.
You're taking understandable differences in motivations and goals, and making up tribal identities to justify them. But that's not what's going on. Part of it's that thing about power (money, in this case) corrupting, some of it's addiction (to money, growth, expansion), and part of it's just different personal goals and incentives. There are specific reasons for you to make your choices, and identifiable reasons corporations gonna corporate. It's not in insurmountable identity gap.

@gruber @marcoarment It looks like Ternus & Panuganty are running special static watchfaces in the iMac M4 launch video. The time was locked to 10:09 for both presentations. Presumaby so was Tepper, but I couldn't see clearly. Makes sense — you wouldn't want the time to fluctuate as they cut in and out, or use clips from different takes…

@gruber About 13-14 minutes into the latest TTS, you say Apple Intelligence’s unique advantage is that no other AI engine has access to sufficient personal information to find your mother's flight arrival time, for example. But I think Google has been doing this kind of thing for years, leveraging Gmail and Google Calendar. Microsoft's access to Teams & SharePoint and org charts provides a lot of comparable access in a work setting, and Outlook.com (which is completely replacing Outlook) provides a lot of data access for private use too.

@gruber I've been thinking about your question: Is there anything wrong with Apple just making the nicest iPad they can for people who like nice things.
The problem is that a 13" iPad Pro with Pencil Pro/keyboard/AppleCare costs $2,735+tax. iPads start at $350 and the 13" M2 MacBook Air starts at $999, so $2,735 is way beyond ‘nice’. Either it’s a ‘pro’ tool, or it’s ostentatiously expensive.
I’d much rather Apple be a company that makes high-quality professional-grade tools, than just a broad range of products based on how much they can extract from customers.
In any case, it’s problematic that a $2,500 iPad is so arbitrarily limited compared to a $1k MacBook. Apple should be easing those limitations, making that iPad Pro more capable and useful. Don’t tell us to buy and carry both. I do not want to put both an 11" iPad Pro and a 13" MacBook in my backpack on a trip! That’s not optimal or premium. It feels short-sighted and greedy.

@siracusa On @atpfm you talked about training vs. personal data. I think Apple's trying to avoid any need for what you're calling (personalized) training. If they can build a good universal model for a feature, then give it local access to all a user's data, the model should be able to accomplish the same things you'd manage with a long configuration preamble, just by accessing data from the lcoal system's data soup (yes, That's A Newton Reference). This way the model is universal and can be updated without losing memory/configuration, Apple avoids models being sensitive, and they don't need Sundar Pichai's theoretical infinite preamble.

Who thinks M4 Macs haven't shipped yet because Apple allocated a chunk of Apple Silicon production to data center chips to support Apple Intelligence, and once that's deployed they will announce & ship M4-gen Macs? @gruber @jsnell @atpfm @kevin

I went looking at panoramas on AVP today, and had a difficult time viewing Tim Holmes' panos (recommended by you on @atp?) in panorama mode.
Worth mentioning in https://www.caseyliss.com/2024/2/18/vision-pro-panos and on ATP?
