TIL “Act of God” is a perfectly normal legalese in the English-speaking world.

As a Frenchman, I find this surprising and mildly irritating.

For clarity, I have nothing against religion. We just keep the church and the state very separated in France (although sometimes secularism is corrupted to justify Islamophobic regulation).

@thibaultamartin as a native english speaker, i've felt this terminology is completely insane since childhood, fwiw. i'm amazed it's never been replaced. (at least here in canada.)

@thibaultamartin If it helps, it's a turn-of-phrase and doesn't imply any actual gods. Although, if you don't like that, you're reeaally not gonna like that the Church of England has it's own laws and courts. . .

@thibaultamartin German has "Höhere Gewalt" ("higher force") which is pretty similar.
