Now, more than ever, we need to keep in mind that we can have an impact. We can build. We can fix. We can educate. We can protect.

Hope is a strong moving force. Apathy serves them.

This is definitely a first world problem but my 32” monitor is too large to be comfortable.

I end up getting messy windows all over the place instead of having apps full screen.

What size and resolution combo do people recommend these days? I’d like to avoid fractional scaling.

I’m only one or two “I asked ChatGPT to produce code and didn’t test it” PRs away from considering it a ban-worthy offense on repos.

If people find LLMs useful to scaffold code and then polish the work, it’s their call to make and I don’t mind.

If they put garbage in a PR and ask me to waste time reviewing it or fixing it for them, it’s a “I’m freeloading on your time” problem and we all have to lose from it.

I have reached this point in my life where given a choice between a local craftsperson and a large company, I will always pick the craftsperson.

It’s not even because of activism.

Large companies scraping a few euros or minutes at scale will save millions. A craftsperson doing the same will save… a few euros or minutes.

A craftsperson will always do a much better job than a large company in my experience.

This post has been brought to you by Engie leaving me without hot water til next week.

After a 10-year hiatus, I’m back to using RSS to follow news and blogs. It feels so calm and decluttered ☺️

But the fear of missing out is real! What blogs would you recommend for someone interested in

✊ Digital rights, activism & privacy

🌱 Offline-first and local computing

💻 General tech trends

🛠️ Hacking devices to improve them

🥰 Mental health & work-life balance

🙌 Good news

I would be grateful if you boosted this to help me discover more blogs!

TIL “Act of God” is a perfectly normal legalese in the English-speaking world.

As a Frenchman, I find this surprising and mildly irritating.

For clarity, I have nothing against religion. We just keep the church and the state very separated in France (although sometimes secularism is corrupted to justify Islamophobic regulation).

Journaling, physiotherapy, the un-quantified self, light exercise, more local apps and less clouds, unionizing, writing, sharing.

2025 is my year of healing.

I am European. I am horrified by the direction the world is taking. I feel powerless against a class that crushes the world to serve its own interests.

Today I joined a union.

Not because I’m at odds with my employer. They’re treating me well.

I’m joining a union because we need class solidarity. I’m joining a union to protect and rebuild public services. I’m joining a union because democracy is more than voting for representatives.

One common complaint about Linux is that vendors aren’t interested in developing apps for it, but I also have the opposite problem daily driving a Mac.

There are so many cool apps on Flathub that I’d love to run on my Mac! Adwaita apps really get out the way, and wouldn’t look so alien on a Mac

How on earth can the music industry justify that an album recorded half a century ago costs as much as an album recorded last year?

I’m all for supporting artists but this just helps shareholders hoard more money. Intellectual property as we do it today is completely broken.

I’ve been using the term “nerd” to describe myself and sometimes others.

“Enthusiast” is probably a more respectful and positive way to describe people who are very interested in a topic, especially since it’s a frequent trait for neurodivergent people.

Does OfflinePunk exist? I mean a Hard Science Fiction subgenre where the Internet and wireless networking haven’t been invented.

A genre where everything is happening on the computers you see, everything is offline-first and asynchronous.

Beyond the reactionary nerd fantasy, I’d love to explore the potential consequences for society.

Would we have Wikipedia? Would message encryption be so important? What would journalism look like?
