Maybe there are some new people who would appreciate unsolicited advice about the fediverse from a nobody. Here goes:
I had a policy of following anyone who interacted with my posts and anyone who posted something interesting.
Without a computer deciding what you see, you have to work a bit to find the good stuff
The lack of automated decision making about what you see can make things super repetitive. Muting hash tags and unfollowing people who do just want to share cat pictures etc is a good way to reduce the noise. Mute the worse offenders and expect to find that some people block you. That is OK. Each person is curating their own experience. You are going to infuriate some of them.
My notification feed is the really good one.
Be a bit friendly about it. Don't worry about people being wrong on the internet. You are unlikely to get a good conversation that way. If you want to argue, better to wait until someone disagrees with you.
That makes you look like a cry baby, just block and move on quietly if you have had enough ( okay that is just my personal gripe).
I might add some more later. There might be better strategies too.

I am here mostly for cat / dogs / ferret pictures!😆

@FandaSin that's it, muted and blocked. Joking apart, that's why I like hashtags, you can have the cute animal pics. I can dial that down and we can be friends

@RobertoArchimboldi
I like Mastodon exactly because you can tailor almost to small details how your time line will look.
No algorithm to force any content on you if you don't want to see it.
Don't worry, I don't share / boost that much of pictures and any I boost have alt text and most of them have some hashtag like cat, dog ...

@FandaSin I agree, although I find that there is a trade off between my laziness and general ineptitude with machines and having the content I want in my feed. The compromise which works for me is having such a volume that I don't mind if I miss a bit. I'll generally stumble over something interesting. I have my notifications feed for quite a lot of my 'must see content'. If I was less lazy and incompetent, I'd explore lists for that purpose

@RobertoArchimboldi Agreed on the last point. If you want to block or mute someone, you can certainly do it, but announcing that you're doing it comes across (to me) as the equivalent of throwing a tantrum.

Irrelevant but maybe interesting: the same goes for when I used to be more active on forums and Q&A sites and people would make lengthy posts to announce they were leaving. They'd often get a bunch of sympathetic responses along the lines of "oh no, this is such a great loss, please don't go, the community won't be the same without you", but more often than not, because of the kind of person who would do this, my own reaction would be like "kthxbye" (although I would generally not say it so bluntly in public).

@diazona I agree. Slightly more seriously, it would be good to have a wider acknowledgement that people are wrong on the internet. Go with 'I cannot disagree more strongly with your offensive nonsense. I am going to engage no further. Have fun' or equivalent

@RobertoArchimboldi I guess so, although something about that particular phrasing makes it come across to me as condescending. (probably the "have fun", if I had to guess) I guess there's nothing that will work for everyone 🤷
My normal approach is to block/mute and say nothing, but if I do make any sort of acknowledgement it's usually along the lines of "I have nothing more to contribute to this discussion" or "this will be my last reply on the topic", and then if they continue to reply and are rude, that's when I go for the block/mute.

@diazona you're right. The 'have fun' sounds condescending. When I drafted it, it sounded friendly. I heartily approve of terminating with 'this will be my last reply on the topic'. Sometimes I could add 'feel free to have the last word, but this has come to the end of its useful life for me'.

@RobertoArchimboldi Oh I like that one too!

@RobertoArchimboldi it really is weird how words that absolutely should be friendly can come across as the complete opposite. Darn you, sarcasm 😛 (actually I quite like sarcasm IRL but it is unfortunate that it doesn't tend to come across very well online)

@diazona writing well informally on line is quite a skill
