Obviously first and foremost Alaa Abdel Fateh should be freed. It also strikes me as telling that the powers that be in Whitehall strut around talking about democracy and human rights but are even more callous and unmoved by human suffering than their Egyptian counterparts.

Regex question: Why does '[0-9]*' return a blank on '>335', but '[0-9]{1,3}' return 335?
This pertains to libreoffice calc which tells me that it uses ICU regular expressions

Maybe there are some new people who would appreciate unsolicited advice about the fediverse from a nobody. Here goes:
I had a policy of following anyone who interacted with my posts and anyone who posted something interesting.
Without a computer deciding what you see, you have to work a bit to find the good stuff
The lack of automated decision making about what you see can make things super repetitive. Muting hash tags and unfollowing people who do just want to share cat pictures etc is a good way to reduce the noise. Mute the worse offenders and expect to find that some people block you. That is OK. Each person is curating their own experience. You are going to infuriate some of them.
My notification feed is the really good one.
Be a bit friendly about it. Don't worry about people being wrong on the internet. You are unlikely to get a good conversation that way. If you want to argue, better to wait until someone disagrees with you.
That makes you look like a cry baby, just block and move on quietly if you have had enough ( okay that is just my personal gripe).
I might add some more later. There might be better strategies too.

I cannot stress enough that you should read this essay.
In Libya, survival came at the cost of being erased even as I labored to sustain the lives of others. The militias do this with impunity, and why shouldn’t they? Europe pays them to keep us trapped, to break us before we reach its borders. The echoes of the past are loud in Libya. The auctions today carry the same cold calculations as those centuries ago: a man reduced to the strength of his arms, a woman to the curve of her back, a child to the potential of their years. And as I stood in the midst of it, I felt the weight of history pressing down, telling me that this is what Blackness has always meant to them, a body to be used, a soul to be ignored.

I am developing an enormous love of #FOSS and the #Commons. For all the criticism, the fact that incredibly skilled people are prepared to share their work for the common good is beautiful. The fact that it creates things of far greater value than could ever be made by private enterprise is life affirming.
All of which is a preamble to bragging that I finally overcame my fear of making a mistake and added WPKN to radio-browser and now I can see it in radio droid and I am super happy. I didn't break anything and it works. For a tech incompetent like myself, this is a big thing. Now to work out how to find its latitude and longitude so that it will appear on that cool radio station map app thing. Go me
I found the transmitter coordinates, but to avoid vandalism apparently, you have to use their git project, https://gitlab.com/radiobrowser/radio-database, to modify entries. This I don't know how to do, but if someone would like to teach me, I would be very happy to learn

So, I'm a village realist by inclination. The world is, modulo are creative abilities, entirely independent of how we represent it.
I also think that being is significance. This is because I think that a word has meaning only in the context of a sentence and so to understand a word you need to grasp its systematic contribution to the truth conditions of sentences in which it can occur. But truth itself is a value determining how sentences should be used. In short, understanding words involves understanding how they systematically affect the grounds and consequences of assertions of sentences involving them. Now, given that what we talk about when we talk about the world is how things are, the meanings of our words are the things in the world. So, the things in the world are significant. Being is significance.
Can this thought be reconciled with my village realism? Probably not. I am comfortable with a world of value. Physicalism is false and silly. The village realist has no worries about values, but we do have to worry that to be significant is to be significant to somebody. So, without bodies, would there be being?
Here is my hope: without agents things would still have significance because they would have the significance that they do in fact have had those agents been there. In other words, being is potential. It is the possibility of mattering. To grasp something's significance is to realise what it does in fact mean. That we, at least, do means that things are actual but all together independent of our representation of them.
Is this just Aristotle? Can Aristotle be a village realist?

Hey, my friend has an iPhone 13. It is running iOS18.2. Both the volume buttons on the side work, but it won't go into silent mode. Any ideas why? I can't find any virtual button that can be used (except an accessibility setting that makes a very dramatic change to the UX). Help would be most appreciated.

I have to say I'm really enjoying Manchester United's failings. I don't have anything particular against the club beyond not being a united fan during their heyday. It just gratifying so see the spectacular failure of Ratcliff's destroying the club aspects of Man U to create his 'cut throat' business. It is an ideology that is bad for business and terrible for a football club. Shafting staff, spectators and ex stars for minuscule 'marginal (financial) gains' looks like it will lead to loss upon loss. So it should

I am rereading Pride and Prejudice. Austen is in many ways a really miserable writer. It is a very unpleasant world which see draws and she has no revolutionary optimism. Her characters, though well to do, are thoroughly trapped. Austen, unlike Wodehouse, sees nothing of value in the world of the idle rich. She is also, I think, acutely aware of the suffering it is built on. She has little hope for the coming capitalist class. Her clergy are greedy and stupid. That's before we come to women and their situation.
I want to know how it was received by her contemporaries. It seems the sort of writing that ought to be scandalous.

I really don't like the tactic of not trying to dismiss one batter because you reckon that the other is a rabbit. It never works. It lets the game drift. The number 11 knows his or her role. She just blocks it out. The other person won't get out. It is a poor tactic.

I would like there to be a purely fictional Wikipedia, Fikipedia. It would be a collaborative attempt to create an entirely fictional universe. Why is it socially acceptable to end disagreements on the fediverse with exceptionally rude and aggressive sign offs? I don't mind people shouting at each other, though there is a bit of tendency to assume bad faith. I think that it is very important to give up the discussion at some point. You had a think, provoked others to the same, but, unless you have some kind of desire for superiority, you don't need to end with 'bye sweety', or 'muted and blocked' or worse.
You can say, 'thanks for the thoughts. I still think that your position is ludicrous, see above, but that is it from me because we are just going round in circles. See you around'
Sharp disagreement, yes. Desire to destroy, no
