Toot

I’m feeling a little bit proud of myself. We went into town with the olds, first for her B12 shot, then to Pak n Save. Big, busy, warehousy supermarket. I excused myself & went for a little walk, to avoid the overwhelm. (Still feeling a little frazzled from travels.) Saw some lovely street art. Took a few deep breaths.

It's nice when self-care leads to such happy discoveries. 😀

The funny thing was that partner couldn’t find a muesli for me, so I had to go back in! But that was ok. A quick dash in & out again.

The weird thing is that I used to work in a similar environment, if less busy. But it was my workplace. I knew where stuff was, and I had a uniform and a clear role to play. Tagging along behind the olds, I have no role. I’m just there, taking it all in & being overwhelmed.

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic

It's always different when we have our work-head on, or are there for others, or with a clear purpose. It then becomes more about the choice we are making and the level of consent it implies.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic

Yes… I feel like I’ve been dragged along, which is t a very positive or constructive mindset.

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic

It's like noise. If we are in control of it, we can tolerate it better, than we can if we aren't.

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic

Definitely. I could tolerate a busy, constructively noisy classroom where I was in control, much better than a noisy supermarket. Even a sports stadium, where I’m not in control, but am a willing member of the crowd, is usually something I can tolerate.
