Partner & olds have gone into town for MIL’s nail appointment, lunch & then her eye injection. (WMD.) I am here by myself, for hours. I am in heaven.

Conversation with MIL yesterday which touched upon misogyny & transphobia. “Why can’t everyone just respect other people as individuals, for who they are?” Indeed.

My FIL used to score a lot of first class cricket. (He’d keep thorough stats, wagon wheels etc for every player.) During one rain affected India NZ test match, he was reading a book, and the Indian manager spotted it & asked if he could show it to Tendulkar. Sachin ended up borrowing it. When FIL went to retrieve it, Sachin autographed it for him. #TestCricket

Last time we came to NZ, we arrived on the Tuesday, I felt unwell on the Thursday, tested positive on the Friday. (In spite of masking with 3m aura. No one else caught it from me. Isolated, HEPA filter outside room etc.)

This time we arrived on the Monday, it’s now Friday , & we’re both fine. So far. (3m aura, HEPA filter on plane & at airport, only 1 flight instead of 2 & hours at Auckland airport…)

Arrived at the olds’ on Monday, & now it’s Thursday already! Been weeding, packing, sorting & cleaning. The olds seem to be in good spirits, showing enthusiasm about the move. Just have to stop them climbing ladders & step stools & wearing themselves out. Day off tomorrow, lunch in the village after MIL has her hair done.

Discovered that partner’s sister& BIL’s 50th anniversary celebrations have been put off until March. FIL very disappointed because it’s an expected change. We’re disappointed because we missed the olds’ 70th due to Covid travel restrictions, so to miss another big NZ family shindig is disappointing. Oh well, at least we’re here for the big move.

I’m feeling a little bit proud of myself. We went into town with the olds, first for her B12 shot, then to Pak n Save. Big, busy, warehousy supermarket. I excused myself & went for a little walk, to avoid the overwhelm. (Still feeling a little frazzled from travels.) Saw some lovely street art. Took a few deep breaths.

I’m sure that everyone will be very excited & relieved to know that I found Partner’s birthday present. I think he’s a little miffed, because he was enjoying teasing me about it. But I left my hat on a train the other so, so there is that. 😁

Took cats outside early yesterday. Fortunately they didn’t spot the butterfly.

I remember the 2003 Canberra Australia fires (from TV, not personal experience.) The thing that struck me was that this was an urban landscape that was burning. Admittedly not far from bush & farmland, but streets & houses. It was surreal. Pictures of the California fires are the same. And knowing that the smoke from these fires is much more toxic than most bushfires, full of emissions from burning plastics. Our homes are full of plastic. This is the stuff of dystopian fiction, but it’s actually happening. And what are we doing about it? #ClimateChange #californiawildfires

The worst thing about this is that it was so utterly predictable. And it’s not going to get better soon, even if we do pull our finger out on climate change immediately. Wildfires in winter?

I guess Trump will be berating forest workers for not sweeping the ground better?

I feel sad for everyone affected, including those affected by smoke . Mask! But I have nothing to offer but words, and as we already know, words aren’t enough, even “thoughts & prayers”.

It’s a shame that it’s predicted to be short lived. What will it take to get politicians to reform housing? Maybe all politicians should publicly declare their housing investments for the next election.

I walked to chiro today, 30 mins brisk in very pleasant conditions, then caught tram into town to meet partner after his golf lesson. Wanted a beer, found a nice bar which was really a restaurant, had a nice but astronomically priced lunch (expensive mains, all veggies etc served as extras/sides). Walked through Treasury & Fitzroy gardens & then through some cute back streets to Richmond station. Glorious sunny day with coolish breeze. And didn’t take any photos, which is odd for me. Sorry. (Gardens including an amazing bed of coleus, Model Tudor village, like the one in Hot Fuzz, Fairy Tree, Captain Cooks cottage which is very cute even if he started the beginning of a torrid time for Indigenous Australians, MCG…)

So we’ve been watching golf on kayo, which is owned by Foxtel. 2 ads keep coming up. One disparages the idea of sharing a hotel room with friends, encouraging you to instead hire an AirBnB. The other is by Advance Australia, focussing on the issues of sexual harassment etc within the Greens Party. (Cos the big 2 never ever have any such issues. Hah!) The implication is that sexual harassment is rife within the greens & that are doing nothing about it.

🤮

When I was a young child, I coveted a classmate’s pack of 72 Derwent colour pencils, not because I was artistic, but because I was fascinated by the range of colours. (I also loved cuisinaire rods & my great aunt’s big bowl of multicoloured & sized tiddly winks.)

I related this to my partner a few weeks ago. Guess what he gave me for Christmas?

This is my first project, classifying different colour groups. I would never have let myself do such a pointless, unproductive task before. I’m in heaven.
