Toot

Written by Dana Fried on 2025-01-12 at 18:28

How many times I wish for G+ style circles or even muts-only posts. There's shitposting I want to do that is 100% not appropriate or safe for broad consumption.

I know there are specific fedi projects that are working towards this, and that at least makes me happy.

There is personal stuff I wanna talk about and Discourse I want to engage in but hell if I'm gonna post it to the Whole Fucking Internet.

@tess would be cool if we could use private mentions for a group, like you can kind of do in Slack.

@tess

Do you keep a list of people you'd put in the shitposting circle?

If so, can you please add me? 🙏

@tess

Yeah. I really feel like G+ circles are the right underlying model for a general purpose social network. They did a whole lot of things wrong on that project, but that one underlying idea they got right.

@tess

Yes! There is a lot I would be comfortable posting to a small circle of close people, but even followers only is far too broad.

I think at a technical level it should even be possible to do this atop existing ActivityPub, it's mostly a UX problem to solve.

@tess Perhaps not quite the answer your were looking for, but group chats did this exact thing for me.

@tess circles were great.

Can't remember if they also had it but would be cool if you could follow people's posts but only when they use particular tags (but you don't want to follow everyone for that tag)

@tess My group of friends has been pining for Livejournal this week, partly for this reason. “Friends only” posts were a big thing there. (I know Dreamwidth still exists but it hasn’t moved with the times, software wise.)
