Ancestors

I’ve had various #iPhone models since they issued me one at Apple, when android was just a twinkle in Andy Rubin’s eye… I haven’t even played with an #Android phone since I had a loaner G1 to check out the competition.

I’m looking at trying #GrapheneOS on a refurb Pixel for my next phone.

Converting my family off iMessage is the biggest problem, but after that…What should I know?

I’m watching every app I use over the next week to make a list and then I’ll start googling compatibility. I use no Google services and only Apple Music, but I’m plenty happy to drop that.

@amd I would avoid GrapheneOS. People associated with that project are extremely problematic to put it mildly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx7CZ-2Bajg

LineageOS will run just fine on Pixels of any shape or form, and do exactly what you likely want.

@koz

Yea, agree! Just look at them wrong and you're getting banned by them out of existence on every channel since you "spread violence" or some other BS without ever posting anyhting in that channel. @pixelcode probably has some more details if required, but please keep this conversation low key as I'm not keen on them fcking around with my other stuff (as they've done to others)

@Mawoka @pixelcode @amd I legit had to take a name out of my previous post on this topic to avoid exposing them to more harassment, so yeah, this is 100% accurate.

@koz

But we still have to remember (unfortunately): the technical stuff is really great, but I'd trust a random Indian guy more than these with my phone OS.

@Mawoka @pixelcode @amd To be honest, at least for my use case, GrapheneOS is solving a problem I don't have. All of these weirdo libertarian fantasists in infosec seem to think they can beat a state actor, when in reality the state actor can just send guys to your house with 2 by 4s to get any password out of you.

Of course, there's an XKCD for that: https://xkcd.com/538/

@koz

Yeah, this is me. I have no real secrets I am trying to protect.

My threat model is "don't give data to FAANG just out of laziness"

@amd

Yea, same for me. That's why I'm running a random ROM with KernelSU and MicroG. No need for any kind of sandboxed Gapps.

@Mawoka @koz

How are the camera app(s) affected by degoogling android?

I don’t care one whit about the AI stuff but a lot of these sensors and lenses are highly dependent on computational photography for quality.

@amd

On Xiaomi, the stock, closed source camera app can be installed and thus works as intended. Just disable network access for the app and you're good to go. But in general: it depends. Some phones got good support and other just basic.
