"Yl'Astrur. Asurmen. Paragon of Light. Hand of Asuryan. Hero. Phoenix Lord. I have many names, but what matter is this: when I am needed, I will be there."

Just getting into the #Aeldari vibe with this bit of #MiniaturePainting .

A thing I made with #FDM over the past week. This is a Gridfinity case, 6 cells by 4 cells, for someone at my LGS, in exchange for a painting commission.

Cultural learnings to make benefit glorious nation of #3DPrinting :

Next post will contain model and materials used.

Several new #MiniaturePainting techniques here:

All told, I'm fairly happy with the outcome, though I admit it's not quite how I imagined it. Technically, in the Zorn palette, black serves the role of blue... so they're secretly blue. As lore says.

[#]Blender Fedi: how do I bevel an edge at an exact angle? Context: I want to chamfer at a 45 degree angle exactly, and the face I'm chamfering is parallel to the XY plane.

Today's fun discovery: apparently, if you install the #FreeCAD Flatpak and try to use the OpenSCAD workbench, you cannot give it a Flatpak-installed OpenSCAD. Literally impossible, even if you nuclear Flatseal permit it everything, because by default, it can neither see the export directory of Flatpak nor the Flatpak binary itself, which it needs to run said export.

How the idea that someone might want a working OpenSCAD workbench in a Flatpak FreeCAD didn't occur to the packager, I dunno.

Today's #MiniaturePainting . The avatar is going to be a mission to paint just due to scale, but the choice of pyrrole red for the hair was 100% right. The infantry were a bit of an accident with a new preshade mix (4 parts flow aid, 3 parts black Aquadrop, 2 parts water, 1 part acrylic retarder), but the colours salvage them. Going to need some earthy colours for the bases, and maybe some more colours on the minis, but definitely better now than before.

Another day, another model badly-designed for #Resin3DPrinting : https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-space-elf-warmancer-bundle-volume-1-pinups-285250

I'm kind of annoyed actually. This designer does quite good work, and this is the first issue of this kind I've yet had with anything they make. It's also really obvious, and would have been spotted if they did a test print. In fact, one of the other community prints showed this to be an issue ... a year ago.

Glad @trashpanda triple-checks all her work!

So... I printed the OPR model that gave me so much grief (with some UVTools help). Now begins the #Painting effort.

I tried a slightly different black preshade here. Instead of equal parts Aquadrop and water, I used a ratio of 5:3:2 of Aquadrop, water and flow aid. In retrospect, should have used more flow aid.

Work time is a real challenge for this model due to its size - the hair ended up getting too dry to work.

@jamie - another model to your scale.

So, to my surprise, OPR responded to my complaints, as made here: https://chaos.social/@koz/113865066733839226

Having checked the model just now, the resin traps are gone from the head (although I still feel one of the horn 'tunnels' is questionable), and the base has been oriented to be 6 inch printer friendly (although I would have gone for a less steep angle for less supports). Glad this got done fairly quickly!

I swear to everloving Jeebus, OPR cannot help themselves with the resin traps. This is the third time I have found resin traps in their models, which I might add are being sold for money, with a reputation for prints that 'just work'.

Sigh.

I am now promoting 'my workshop' to 'our workshop'.

For those who are curious, the text reads 'Long live the socialist republic of Vietnam' or something similar.

New year, new tuning thread! Today's filament which caught my curiosity is 3DEA's PETG-CF Pro15. This stuff is interesting because, unlike most CF filaments, its carbon fibres are concentrated in its core, leaving an outer jacket of pure material. As if to flex this fact, it is available both in black and in white: I am printing the white today.

This is similar to the techniques used by Essentium for their HTN-CF25, but the CF load is lower here.

Let's go! (1/?)

[#]CAD and #3DModelling Fedi: I'm looking for an SFU1204 ball screw model, 550mm length. I can find some parametric models, but they all require software that I have no access to in order to resize.

Would anyone be able to help me out? Thanks!

As a fan of #Gridfinity, I found this #OpenSCAD tool both really useful and really convenient. I've made a lot of different bins with it, and can confirm it works well.

The servos in the video are still available (the link in the video description is dead): https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008294907182.html

They also come in a range of torques and prices, but the prices don't differ by much. While their voltage range would suggest 32 or 36V power, as the video shows (and Stepperonline themselves claim) 48V is fine, and probably preferred.

Gearboxes are still a matter of research for me.

I've been investigating (slowly, with a lot of help from @jookia and @amd ) a #DIY #CNC build. In the process, I have learned a lot of things, and felt like sharing some of what I've learned.

One example is from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clgpZJFoqIQ

The tl;dws are:

  1. Stepper motors (closed or open loop) never hit their holding torque at any rotation.

  1. Servos have less peak torque, but hold it at any rotation speed they're rated for.

Conclusion for me: servos and gearing are best here.

Because patents are the worst, ZS Plus nozzles are about to vanish. Aliexpress already doesn't have any, and TL's own site has them at half price to clear: https://trianglelab.net/products/zstc-mk8-volcano-v6-zsd-mk8-volcano-v6-zs-mk8-volcano-v6-k1-nozzle

Words cannot express how much I love these nozzles. It's the first high-flow hardened that isn't designed terribly from first principles, and mine has run spools of CF material with hardly a complaint. Get one (or several) while you can.

Thanks to @jookia pointing out stuff on the #FreeCAD Github, it seems my FreeCAD issues are neither unique to me, nor un-noticed:

While I am uncertain in how far user comments on those issues would hold weight with the FreeCAD devs, it can't hurt to chime in (as I have) and tell them to please improve these things.

So I had some issues with the new Assembly workbench in #FreeCAD 1.0: https://chaos.social/@koz/113785653157028027

Thanks to @amd , these issues are solved. Turns out the thing I was doing wrong was selecting the part in the assembly and moving it using the arrows. The correct thing to do is just click any face and drag it around.

@mia - figured you'd like to know that.
