[#]Standards people! Do I know anyone who works or has worked in multi-stakeholder internet governance and who can tell me whether this whole #web4 / #virtualworlds thing at the EU Commission is actually a thing or am I correct in assuming that we're looking and #industry-driven hot air?

@thisismissem @ilumium i would say the truth is, if not a third thing, halfway between those two options. Industrie 4.0 is a thing I would class as actual (if by it you mean data-rich and automation-friendly manufacturing and industrial data spaces), so cringeworthy branding and framing aside, i think there ARE real-world applications of AR/VR and HCI that would build on these in ways that help EU manufacturing more than Chinese or New World manufacturing, but it's pretty niche...

@thisismissem @ilumium to put it another way, it's not an actual thing that the web platform has to worry too much about, because the total number of human users of the web that would be users of this tech is tiny. but if you are in next-gen manufacturing and want to see this super nerdy, inaccessible, machine-to-machine stuff start accruing human interfaces, this is very much a think to pay attention to!

@by_caballero @thisismissem Thanks a lot this is really helpful. Do you have an opinion as to whether that niche would require additional regulation in any way?

@ilumium @thisismissem I am fairly conservative, I actually think that all capital-intensive infrastructure requires regulation proportional to how slow it is to replace... so I might not be the most objective or fair person to ask
