I am European. I am horrified by the direction the world is taking. I feel powerless against a class that crushes the world to serve its own interests.

Today I joined a union.

Not because I’m at odds with my employer. They’re treating me well.

I’m joining a union because we need class solidarity. I’m joining a union to protect and rebuild public services. I’m joining a union because democracy is more than voting for representatives.

@thibaultamartin Can I just join a union? I don't have one at work as I work for a very small company run by a friend of mine, but... I support unions. Can you just join any union? (I'm in the US, btw.)

In France you can join a nation-wide union even if there is nobody from that union already working for your company.

I don’t know about the US though. I’ve heard positive noises about “You Deserve a Tech Union” but I’m not qualified to say anything about it!

@thibaultamartin @rasterweb the same in Germany. You can join any union, but if you really want to organize in your company, everyone should be in the same organisation... And if you want full support of the union, you should have a significant number of employees organized, as they prefer fights they might be able to win. Oh and it would be good if the union has experience with the sector. But any union is better than no union.

@desperadoduck @thibaultamartin I did a little poking around and it seems difficult or not possible to join a union in the US unless it's at the place you work or you have a professional affiliation to a specific type of work.

@rasterweb @thibaultamartin wow, this is sad. Are there many requirements to create a new one?

@rasterweb @thibaultamartin I have always wondered this too! I would love to just join some unions in the US to support people…but I don’t know if that’s even allowed or how I would do it.
