Toot

Written by Pete on 2025-01-09 at 09:33

Winter has even got to my indoor-only bike this year. A #cycling #PSA: If you're prone to getting a sweat on, then check your handlebars once in a while. I've sweated a hole into mine.

@chrisgerhard Good call. I'd imagine they'd make me quicker round the kitchen too.

@pete

Or carefully wrap the whole handlebars in electrical tape before installing the bar tape.

The handlebar tape you use should NOT be able to soak up any moisture.

Of course, quickly rinsing the bike after each training session is ideal. Especially if it's not your dedicated indoor trainer bike.

@horststorkebaum @chrisgerhard The full leccy tape barrier is a good idea as I think capillary action will take sweat under bar tape irrespective of whether or not it's absorbed into the tape.

This time round I've gone for a retro design Cinelli tape that looks really quite similar to the corroded bars it's covering!

I'm joking by the way: they've been replaced.

@pete

The kind of tape makes a difference as a tape which soaks up moisture kind of stores the NaCl, and thus promotes corrosion better and better the more you sweat onto / into it.

It also stays wet for much longer which also "helps" in this regard.

@pete keep monitoring it and if you get to 20% material loss it may be time to repair. 😜
