[#]soupquest 2025!

(A silly resolution to eat more soup in 2025. Join in if you like!)

This week, we've had two soups:

  1. Carrot, chicken and ginger soup. Made from bargain loss-leader 8p carrots from Aldi πŸ˜ƒ Perhaps my favourite winter warmer soup.

  1. Polish sausage soup with pearl barley & veg (pictured). A great "dead veg" soup - it works with whatever we've got in the fridge or is in season. Tonight, carrots, onions, leeks, parsnips & peas, plus herbs & spices. Full now!

[#]soupquest 2025 continues!

Soup 3. We had a bastardised Tom Yum soup, which I desecrated further with noodles. I'm too ashamed of how far it was from proper Tom Yum for photos πŸ˜† Tasty though.

Soup 4. Last night, we needed a quick dinner so I made a soup I lovingly call "wet pasta". It's whatever veg we have in (this time onion, leek, celery and canned beans) in a herby broth, with either orzo or macaroni, and sometimes with either chicken or pancetta. A flexible bowl of warm comfort.

Soup 5. One from the freezer - a portion of some ancient Celeriac and Potato, with wholegrain mustard. I have no idea what the recipe was as it was from Oct 2021 🀣 Still tasty though.

@otherryn I think I've got a recipe for the first one somewhere but the Polish sausage one is a free form one πŸ˜„ I had it at a cafΓ© about 10 years ago and have been riffing on it ever since - changes every time! I'll try to dig out the carrot & ginger one though 😁

@louisa_ I love a good homemade soup. I make mine in my slow cooker which makes 4 portions: 1 for now; 1 for the fridge for tomorrow; 2 in margarine tubs for the freezer.

My favourite is sweet potato and red lentil. At Xmas I made spicy parsnip. Yesterday I had a mystery soup from the freezer. (Labels would be so BORING.) It turned out to be tomato and red lentil.

@aroundthehills ooh do you have a recipe for the sweet potato and red lentil one? That sounds good. Mystery soups sound fun too πŸ˜†

The last of our 8p parsnips will be going into a soup later this week: some for eating fresh, some for the freezer. Supermarket soups are always disappointing compared to homemade, aren't they?

@louisa_ Half of my 8p Parsnips went into soup. The rest went into a very strange curry which I made by following a recipe. I NEARLY had all of the ingredients so I gave it a go!

Sweet Potato and Red Lentil soup is, very roughly:

Cook Whizz Eat.

I've learned not to add garlic as it can be bitter. I may add a Veg stock cube.

@aroundthehills thank you! That's my type of recipe too - I generally ignore measurements instructions, especially for soups πŸ˜„

@louisa_

I made soup yesterday [lentil, carrot and barley] and actually LABELLED the tubs I put in the freezer!

This could be a game changer!

@aroundthehills haha, if you're anything like me, you'll get to learn just how many eons soup stays sometimes in the freezer πŸ˜†

@louisa_ I ate some kind of nut fritter* for my tea last night. I don't remember making it but it was wrapped up nicely in tinfoil and looked quite tasty so I let it defrost and heated it up with some veg. Its matching twin has gone back in the freezer to surprise me in a few months time. 😁
