Toot

People who know me are probably acutely aware of my highly sceptic view on AI in general, stemming from my personal experiences in this space that started at university with my diploma thesis in the late 80s and took form in the 30 years thereafter.

I acknowledge its power and its capabilities that transcend my own in certain ways. And how it can be useful.

But what I didn't realise so far is its tremendous impact on society because of its even larger power to enshittify things that we have grown to assume as being sources of knowledge.

This is disgusting. I feel betrayed.

If you can, please spend the time to watch this video from Freya, and form your own opinion:

@DanielaKEngert FWIW, I would be interested in AI. But we don't have AI, because a text generator that doesn't understand the texts it generates is not intelligent. It's Artificial Dumbness, not Intelligence.

What's sold as AI nowadays is a scam.

@sbi @DanielaKEngert IMHO the term "stochastical parrot" describes the AI systems very well. https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3442188.3445922

@rkbw Yup, heard that before. I used "sophisticated parrot" a lot before.

@DanielaKEngert I really enjoyed the video and think that LLMs open a very dark door to "get money quick" schemes or even legitimate companies poisoning the searchable internet with useless generated texts so much that it will be unusable for researching topics in the near future.

@hniemeyer It's so sad that it isn't enough anymore to learn how to roam the internet for the entire digital knowledge of the world. Now you need to also learn how to distinguish fact from fiction (outside of art). Unfortunately, this requires knowledge - probably even more - in the first place.

Limitless capitalism in its many incarnations is just another race to the bottom.

@DanielaKEngert To me it is also a symptom of late stage capitalism as you said. Hopefully Wikipedia stays clear of generated texts for a long time :(

@DanielaKEngert The video starts with a long talk on different file formats - is there a more concise version ? 🤔

@rkbw I'm not aware of one, and I wouldn't expect one from Freya herself, given her track record of well-researched content.

Tongue in cheek: ask AI for a summary. May be, Google or Bing or whichever can find one for you.
