@cabel That it threw “alleged” in there is odd. Beyond that, nailed it. Maybe in iOS 18.3 Apple Intelligence will be able explain why Tim did what he did. Not that any excuse will make it more palatable.

@cabel So it turned out that the Tim Cook that donated was not the CEO of Apple, but another Tim Cook. Posting this seems to reinforce the original error. People reading this think the CEO of Apple donated to Trump when that isn’t correct.

@timswan Can you send me an article backing this GPT-sounding claim? I see no such correction here: https://www.axios.com/2025/01/03/tim-cook-apple-donate-1-million-trump-inauguration

@cabel I’ve now read multiple articles claiming different things. I’m going to wait until I’m confident one way or the other. I’ll just add that the Axios report is based on third-hand reporting and that other reports appear to be using it as the basis for their articles. Either way, I think the good that Apple does outweighs paying protection money to Trump’s inauguration and I’ll wait to see if Apple supports Trump’s policies before deciding just how bad this is.

@timswan Can you send me a link to just a single one of the articles you read claiming Tim did NOT donate to Trump, then? Thanks in advance!

@timswan Sorry Tim, just want to ping you again on this as it’s very urgent as i don’t want to spread misinformation. Can you send me a link to just one of those articles you found that say Tim did NOT donate $1M to Trump? Thank you!

@cabel I don’t have a link to an article, but I read somewhere that the Tim Cook that donated lived in Minnesota. That, of course, could be completely wrong. So far I haven’t seen this reported by any of the large newspapers, and they’ve been all over the donations from Bezos, Ellison, Zuckerberg, etc.

@timswan You’ve got the stories mixed up — the Tim Cook in Minnesota donated to BIDEN’S inaugural fund. We were wondering if Tim Cook also supported Biden in the same way; he did not.
The story about Tim Cook (California) donating to Trump is absolutely true and most likely planted by Apple to get ahead of it. If it was false, Apple PR would’ve been all over it and Axios within 5 milliseconds.

@cabel That’ll teach me to post without knowing the facts 100% first. Disappointing, but given the state of things, not surprising.
