Toot

What is your longest running indie Mac app?

I think mine is Butler https://manytricks.com/butler/. I’ve been using it daily since 2003, and subconsciously consider it part of the system. I don’t know how people use computers without multiple clipboards or custom website searches from a key-triggered popup bar.

@gruber Curious to hear your answer.

@stewf Probably PopChar https://ergonis.com/popchar. Been using it since before Mac OS X. Just two of its many features that I cherish:

• Find a character by sketching a rough outline

• Find a font that supports a certain character

@fhardwig @stewf @ia iA Writer, I’ve been using it since it came out for MacOS in 2011 and I haven’t opened a document in Word by choice since.

@stewf Gotta be BBEdit, which I’ve been using since version 2.1 in the fall of 1992:

@bbedit, no question. Default Folder X would be a close second, then @launchbar, maybe?

@JTDType @stewf I’d say Transmit as well. But I’ve been using Alfred for many years as well.

@onpaperwings @JTDType @stewf BBEdit. And likely Transmit right after that.

@scottboms @onpaperwings @JTDType @stewf Definitely @bbedit for the longest continuous usage. I was also using Transmit back when was still named Transit. And @mjtsai’s SpamSieve is likely a close third in the running.

@stewf Jumpcut probably.

Otherwise maybe BBEdit? (though technically it was TextWrangler I was using before)

(I’m guessing the question is about Mac-only apps. There are a lot of other multiplatforms apps I’ve been using for as much or longer)

@colinmford Me too! Been on my Mac almost as long as Butler. Long ago, I decided to make my Desktop folder my default downloads folder, and Hazel does a weekly sweep to keep it organized in folders by type.

[#]Butler is probably NOT the oldest indie app that I use, I think #DefaultFolder is older, and I use quite a few more, but I’ve also used Butler from around the same time on as you did, nice to see another early user!

Anyway, it is indispensable, and always the very first app I install on ever new Mac 😄

@stewf Definitely BBEdit because of its fantastic multi-file search/replace, and file comparison function. Started with BBEdit Lite v.3 somewhere around 1994. Switched to TextWrangler for a certain period until it got discontinued.

@stewf

Once Quicksilver went down the tubes, I found Launchbar (https://obdev.at/products/launchbar/index.html), which I rely on heavily, paired with Keyboard Maestro (http://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/), which I think does some of what Butler does, but on steroids).

And BBEdit, of course!
