Our family rented one of these on a trip to Epcot Center in 1992. As a kid it felt like driving the future to the land of the future. https://worldkey.io/@LibrarianRA/113935543847924788

I’ve recently made a point of gently directing folks to email if anything gets beyond basic chitchat.

I shudder when I think about how many of my important research conversations of the last few years are locked into social media DMs instead of indexable email.

But then @impressia can’t quite handle Mastodon replies/comments that have multiple images in them. (It won’t open them in uncropped view.) And the Pixelfed app just refuses to show those images at all.

Not sure I see much benefit in using a Pixelfed app at all right now. Will just follow everyone with Ivory.

I’m just now wrapping my head around the fact that not only can you view Pixelfed accounts with Mastodon apps, but you can also view Mastodon accounts with Pixelfed apps.

But what’s the deal with links that aren’t clickable in the official @pixelfed app? Strangely replicates even the dumb features of IG. I guess it will get better.

Fortunately, @impressia does have clickable URLs.

The tech world has convinced every segment, including nonprofits, that “scaling” is the inevitable goal. Maybe perpetual growth doesn’t actually meet your mission. Maybe providing a few deep interactions is more impactful than many shallow ones. Plant stronger, individual seeds and they will spread.

I’m struggling with how to be at work today. On one hand, no one wants to be constantly reminded of the bleak current events, but it also feels cruel to pretend everything is ok.

I feel for those folks who work at companies like Basecamp (37signals) where “discussing poliltics” is not allowed.

Flickr’s Year in Review https://flickr.com/year-in-review/2024/ is a delightfully kooky reminder of what makes it a platform outside social media norms. Good to see them acknowledge non-phone image sources, like scanners.

Every newish Tesla I see tells me something about its owner: Either they don’t mind making one of the world’s worst people richer, nor being associated with that person; or they truly don’t pay attention.

I feel guilty being so judgmental, but I don’t know what else it can tell me.

I can sincerely say I’ve enjoyed moving most of my international banking away from evil companies like Chase and PayPal. For about 3 years now, Wise has been my main bank for any personal or Fonts In Use transaction that has to cross borders. Unlike most financial services, it’s actually a pleasure to use. Thus, I have no compunction inviting you to come along with this affiliate link: https://wise.com/invite/dic/stephenc1

On Thursdays I work on my book with my editor at the #Rockridge Library. Those afternoons they happen to have “Read to a Dog” time, in which someone brings in a patient dog who sits and listens as the kids narrate their favorite book. Among the many reasons #libraries are the best.

If you’re unsure where to stand on generative AI, seek the opinion of a friend who can really draw, design, or write. Their answer may be instructive.

What is your longest running indie Mac app?

I think mine is Butler https://manytricks.com/butler/. I’ve been using it daily since 2003, and subconsciously consider it part of the system. I don’t know how people use computers without multiple clipboards or custom website searches from a key-triggered popup bar.

I’m not sure what I’m reading here, but I like to imagine at age 7 I had some sense of the plight of immigrants, even in my sheltered Utah life. My mom was an immigrant after all (Sweden 1947). https://www.flickr.com/photos/stewf/25945870803/in/album-72157665031954360
