"Daily reminder that the underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth."

@Grutjes I believe AI is geared to selling more adverts... Google, M$ and others love that money for nothing gig.

@Grutjes I don’t agree. Didn‘t people say that on every big invention? This is just the ages old „people will be unemployed“ argument which turned out false in history so many times.

Is there some room left behind the rock you seem to live? I would like to move there too.
Look at the (even) more capitalistic societies than Germany and you might be able to understand the struggles and fears of the others.
The devaluation of some peoples work (e.g. artists, poets, some coders) has already begun.

@gianluca @Grutjes Yes and more often than not they where right. the extreme disparities in wealth distribution today comes, in a big part, from the constant shifting of production factors from labor to capital.
much more important is what is new about ai. it does not only do the work that used to be done by a laborer (like a mechanical loom) but it is also sucking up every bit of work that was done so far, ripping it up and putting it together new. a generative ai does not create. it only steals.

Exactly.

The work of people I know, well known illustrators like Iris Compiet, has already been stolen by AI. Companies are now hiring good illustrators for a fraction of the cost to correct AI mistakes in stead of creating original work.

@Grutjes
There are examples where industrialisation has led to work vanishing, or turning from high-skilled to low-skilled (painters used to know how to mix paints). Generally this has been a good thing: the less people need to be educated on one thing, the more they can be educated in something else.
What I'm concerned that about is that AI doesn't lead to this sort of permanent uplift. As it taints the springs it draws from, it can't move with culture. There's no end-game.

@Grutjes I'm hoping someone in China has plugged #AI into their economics data to try a centrally planned economy again, this time with proper amounts of computational power to rival that of capitalist markets since... well, capitalist markets have so far utterly failed to price in possibly obvious future apocalyptic issues like global warming and the ice caps melting. #capitalism #socialism

You seem to be mistaken about the nature of China today. It's state capitalism, that is capitalism without the democratic / liberal bit. It's a capitalist dictatorship, not a planned economy, and certainly not socialist.

Also, they already have plugged AI in, and it's pure horror.

I'm afraid the Musk-style cannibalist capitalism doesn't care about that at all. It doesn't want to preserve the system of exploitation for future capitalist leeches, they just want to suck everything dry, now.
