Ancestors

I went to Books With Pictures today. I hadn’t been in since just before they moved, just before 5yo was born, and then the pandemic started… I’d seem them at shows, but it felt good to finally get in.

Katie, who runs the place, is great. I walked in and said (of 5yo) “she really likes Snapdragon; got anything else we should check out?” and she immediately said “yes i do” and pulled 7 more things off the shelves.

Toot

Most if these recommendations have been hits, at least in the sense that 5yo loves “reading” them on her own and we’ll start them together over and over, but her ability to stick with the same story for multiple nights is still pretty marginal. But we finished this one tonight and I loved it.

We usually agree to two chapters a night, but we did a third because I really wanted to see how it wrapped up.

@a I love to hear of kids reading by themselves! Our 7yo has been really challenging to get to reading and has never really sat and read by themselves.

@jameschip Mine isn’t actually reading yet, just “reading”. She’ll spend most of an hour on books, studying the pictures and get the story well enough that she’ll tell us what happens, but can’t actually read the words yet. Once she can, i’m not sure we’ll ever get her out of her room.

Our almost-7yo started off way behind when she came to us at barely-5, and while her actual reading has caught up nicely, she doesn’t have anything like 5yo’s drive (although it’s rubbing off).

@a me and my wife are both quite booky so we were hoping that woukd just rub off, but the eldest is just not very interested, even in looking at the pictures.

Our eldest has this thing where if they cant do something straight away they tend to just dismiss it as sometging they cant do, and then it is really hard to get them to give it a go again. See taking several years to learn to ride a bike because they wouldnt practice.

We are hoping once their reading improves they might start picking books up more.

Our 3yo is however much more booky. Like your younger tgey cant read, but will always be picking up books and looking through or bringing them to us to read to them.
