I think LLMs may wind up being remembered the same way we remember 19th century Spiritualism. A bunch of scientists and rich people bought into Spiritualism, too -- until they didn't.

Yeah it morphed into ufology and woo and the Satanic Panic and now it's Q. I'm hoping LLMs won't worm their way into the culture nearly as much as Theosophy and Spiritualism did.

@annaleen the more LLMs feed on LLM-generated material, the worse they will get. And they're feeding on that more and more, since there's more and more of it on the Internet. :(

I wish AI-generated content had to be labeled as such. I don't want computers to pass the Turing test.

@annaleen Perhaps we need another Harry Houdini - someone who used deception to entertain and delight rather than swindle people - to come along and expose their secrets. Houdini loathed the spiritualists and other fake miracle-mongers!

All indications so far are that LLMs have a Wizard of Oz aspect to them: impressive as they may appear at first, they're still fallible - sometimes dangerously so - and disappointment still awaits anyone who pulls back the curtain...

Survivable for them, but only with ubiquitous surveillance & fascist rule

@annaleen There is a wonderful darkly satirical book by Don Marquis called Hermione and her Little Group of Serious Thinkers that explores the ego, frivolity, shallowness of 19th c. Orientalism & Spiritualism. It’s really great.

Highly recommend all of Marquis’ works.

A humanist social satirist. Writing late 19c & early 20th.

@annaleen There’s a section in Alan Turing’s landmark paper where he mentions how “the statistical evidence, at least for telepathy, is overwhelming” and talks about the potential methods and pitfalls of including ESP in the Turing Test. The Spiritualism was there from the start!
