Love dis. I want to keep building stuff before I feel ready.

TBH, there's a lot that I feel ready to build, skill-wise but not energy-wise... many projects I'm afraid to share, because I don't trust my future bandwidth levels to complete them.

But I'm wrapping up my last giant video-editing job at work, and I think I won't have to do much more of that in future, which will make me 97% less stressed and therefore >50% better at eating, sleeping, and Doing the Things. πŸ’™πŸ€˜βœ¨ https://mas.to/@oblique_strategies/113727976860572153

An interesting thing from Supercon this year: people used to talk about my "infectious enthusiasm"; this time, I heard "cult of personality".

It struck at my last few years in burnoutβ€”which have kept me from BUILDING and SHARING, in favor of just kinda going "oo shiny!" & "I built a thing once." It hasn't felt great.

To be clear, it's still a sort of compliment. But I want to be known as a creative & curious Builder – not just a conspicuous hairstyle & perky demeanor.

Slowly coming back! 🫢

@alexglow thanks for sharing and I wish you well on your journey to recovering and recharging. It's hard to start AND finish a creative things!

For me often the start is rejuvenating but then it becomes a task and I want it to be good (not perfect but something I can be proud of). I then find it hard to start small things to gain momentum since I do like that big thing I started but don't have the energy to complete.

@alexglow Speaking of, I'll finish editing and post my first video today even if it could be better. Thanks for the inspiration!

@shom Hell yeah! I have a couple of relevant notes by my desk:

This is a classic as well – Ira Glass on the gap between taste and developing new skills: https://youtu.be/91FQKciKfHI

Good luck with the video ^_^

@shom I'm also trying to shift to a process-oriented mindset... just doing 5 min of XYZ per day. It's working with Duolingo (6pm to get the Early Bird bonus) and music (most days at sunset).

Thinking into this, 5 min of any build seems like a huge Thing: I can just grab my guitar, but for a project, I have to remember where I was, find the materials, pull up browser tabs... maybe I can make it easier to "just pick up" by keeping one staged on a desk, w/ a dedicated Pi screen? πŸ€”

@shom ...Just have to be able to pick one at a time!! Lots of backlog from 2+ years, haha. But this is progress!

@alexglow hey thanks for the encouragement. I love the Ira Glass comment, "your taste is killer" is something I'll think when a photo I envisioned DOES NOT look anything like it πŸ˜‚

You're so right about making things easy to pick up is the key to making progress on it. I should adapt the Duolingo streak mentality. If nothing else I'll review words (for weeks at end sometimes without progressing) just so I don't quit altogether. hahaha but I need to go a step farther and embrace LET IT SUCK!

@alexglow And the idea of personal tech-debt really resonated when I shared it here almost a year ago, it was quite reaffirming. I've done a lot more stuff this year. But I'm also trying to be chill with the notion of seasons in life and interests, trying to embrace what I'm currently interested in without worrying about what I should be finishing. It's a process, not sure if it's a good one yet.

(feels weird to link my own post, but this is what I mean: https://shom.dev/posts/20240119_tech-debt-for-personal-projects/)

@alexglow it's not THAT exciting, the TL;DR is not to get stuck on "really-nice-postβ„’" and like you said, let it suck.

Also, genuine thanks for sharing your thoughts, it was so timely for me. I finally edited and posted my first video instead of worrying/obsessing and also put together a test version of a photo portfolio (been on the list for ever)!
