i’m embarrassed to ask this, but what does this new yellow Mail swipe action do? Is it “Mute”?
I looked in Prefs to try to teach myself, and it’s not even listed as an option!?

@cabel block sender?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from dbarros@mastodon.social
@dbarros Nope! I’ve done it a few times (because pulling all the way left usually trashes) yet my Blocked Senders list remains empty.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel Interesting. The mystery deepens.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from dbarros@mastodon.social
@cabel It removes the email from your Primary inbox and sends it back to the category assigned to it (which is not at all intuitive 🫠).

@cory Oh!?!? Wild. I keep doing it by accident because full left swipe SHOULD be “Trash”. Does it train, or is it a one time action?!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel I only figured it out because I kept doing the same thing. I don't know if it trains anything though. You can manually categorize senders but that's a blunt instrument that then prevents any "intelligence" from factoring into decisions as to where it goes.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cory@follow.coryd.dev
@cory @cabel and seems there’s no way of changing the yellow swipe default back to delete in this categorised view. Frustrating for the muscle memory!

@cabel based on the similar icons I would guess “mark this is as not primary”
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from kyle@mister.computer
@kyle Oh. Oh. Is it a one time action or does it “train”?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel I would hope “train” but no clue, I use the All Inboxes inbox which doesn’t have these features. ‘‘Twas an educated guess.

@cabel Don’t be embarrassed. They’re doing stupid shit over there.

@louie @cabel The whole Mail categorization feature confused me completely. And it was hard to figure out how to disable it.
Amazing that this was enabled by default for millions of folks.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from chockenberry@mastodon.social
@chockenberry @louie @cabel You can disable it?!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from rmasoni@mastodon.social
@rmasoni @chockenberry @louie “List View”, right?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel @chockenberry @louie That’s… weird. Thanks!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from rmasoni@mastodon.social
@cabel @rmasoni @louie Yeah, and these to get rid of the icons.
(That I turned off icons, a thing that I obviously love, tells you how useless they were in my inbox. Most email I get these days is automatically generated and not from a person with an avatar. I suspect I’m not alone.)
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from chockenberry@mastodon.social
@chockenberry @rmasoni @louie They’re rolling out a system for branded icons (I did it for panic of course!) through Apple Business Connect (which drives Apple Maps!) but everything is kind of half-implemented right now: for example, you can enroll a whole domain, but they don’t work yet, only enrolled individual email addresses work?!. All of this coming in so hot. i’ll try to panic blog this!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel @chockenberry @rmasoni @louie I tried to created a branded icon for the church I go to, and it required (couldn't proceed without) a link to the developed app we don't have…
Imagine there are a lot of app-less orgs who nonetheless would want to using the branding features?!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from jkrahn@mstdn.ca
@jkrahn @chockenberry @rmasoni @louie No app should be necessary. Apple Business CONNECT is designed for all kinds of everyday businesses, apps or not. I’ll try to put together a guide!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from cabel@panic.com
@cabel @jkrahn Ya, no app required (done it for a biz without one). They do validate submissions and I think everyone is on vacay right now.

@cabel @chockenberry @rmasoni @louie I’m assuming this mess has nothing to do with the IETF BIMI standard, right?

@chockenberry thank you! I had looked to see how to turn off the useless (to me) icons and failed!

@chockenberry oh thanks, I agree they’re completely pointless!
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from htwj@mastodon.coffee
@chockenberry @cabel @rmasoni @louie I am surprised to find I like them. I already keep cards in my address book for companies I use so attaching images to them in contacts has nice results. The iPad Mail app already feels wrong without them.
Twitter profile images were a good source of appropriatly simplified images for that small size.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from ridogi@mastodon.social
@chockenberry You know, I really love avatars in Mail (conceptually), however I am plagued by running a business where almost every email I get is from a previously-unknown sender. I can make contacts for businesses and people I know, but for most email, it’s from someone who doesn’t have a contact (yet). I turned it off too, which I don’t like.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from louie@pdx.social
@cabel @rmasoni @chockenberry @louie if you have multiple mail accounts you will want to set each one to List view individually as well as “All Inboxes”
Also, if you have mail notifications enabled to either notify you of each message, or to give you a count of unread messages on the app icon that will now only notify you if the message is in the "Primary" Category.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from ridogi@mastodon.social
@cabel my phone has text labels enabled and calls this "Clear". Clearing a message removes it from view but leaves it in the inbox (I can still see it when viewing All Mail).

@mario @cabel That’s not at all intuitive for that icon.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from GeekAndDad@mastodon.social
@mario may I ask where this setting is? It’s way clearer! I searched the settings app for “labels" but just got the on/off switch label setting. On 18.2

@cabel my guess is it will tell Mail that the sender isn’t “Personal” mail, which gets treated special when you have the new categories thingo on

@cabel We assume AI’s affect on UX will be to replace GUI with voice/chat, your example shows it’s more than that. Confirming, correcting, undoing what #ai did for us is a new #ui playground.

@Tinrocket @cabel
Apple Mail app on iOS predates Gmail app…? So how is this Apples fault? 🤔
(The Mail app on macOS is directly from NeXTMail).
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Bryan@macaw.social
@Bryan Apple Mail lets you add email accounts from different sources, including GMail. But Apple designed the UI, and it’s confusing when you have different swipe behaviors for different accounts, especially in the same list view.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Tinrocket@mastodon.online
@Tinrocket @cabel I believe that can be fixed in Settings -> Mail -> Mail Accounts -> [Specific Gmail Accounts] -> Account Settings -> Advanced.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Jasonact@mastodon.social
@Jasonact Thanks for digging down—doesn’t look like anything there changes the icon order/position. Time to give Apple Support a call. 🫠
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Tinrocket@mastodon.online
@Tinrocket Perhaps not the icon order/position, but we can at least make the options consistent across accounts (gmail and otherwise), which I think was in question.

@cabel dialing in from EU device. Even in categories view this last item doesn’t exist. Maybe you are swipe-feeding the US-only AI training feature 🙄
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from retrakker@mastodon.social
@cabel So this is specifically for mail messages from other categories which ALSO appear in the Primary inbox. Yes, they are cross-listed in both places (see the little category icon next to it). Far as I can tell selecting Clear removes this particular message from Primary, but it’s still in its category.
