The most Swiss thing I can think of is that we clean our tunnels. Apparently, we have been cleaning our tunnels for over 50 years. Supposedly, it's done for safety (clean means bright and bright is safer than dark), but the real reason is that we feel that clean tunnels are just better than dirty tunnels.

@reichenstein und in Brüssel bröseln die Tunnelwände…

@reichenstein It feels like “cleaning the tunnels” could be a euphemism for something. 🤷♀️
But I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with the brightness of the tunnels between the airport and the city of Zürich.

@reichenstein yes. personally, we find that admirable.

@reichenstein Sure, but why are you illustrating this with a picture of a truck with huge rotating brushes? Everyone know we clean our tunnels manually, with a toothbrush.
That’s the only possible explanation, given how long they close tunnels for cleaning.

@reichenstein Cleanliness is next to swissliness.

@reichenstein In America, we clean when the filth overwhelms the machinery causing service to halt - not the whole tunnels, but the machinery and a slim margin around the machinery to make train move again.

@reichenstein Clean tunnels are just better. I hate gross tunnels unless they're at least 500 years old. Even then, I'd still prefer a dry, clean tunnel, a few cobwebs and motile mummies would be acceptable.

we have a similar device in the UK - not as sophisticated as the Swiss one and I'm not sure how often the tunnels actually get cleaned, but it does get done every so often..

Cleaning off the car dirt from the walls for sure protects the material. Look at the erosion of some Buildings close to the street in cities like Rome or Paris, Berlin or London.
When there is much traffic along buildings they erode. Even worse in a tunnel with less ventilation than open streets.
Just speculating here.

@populistensohn @reichenstein only UK tunnel cleaning I can think of is the ‘fluffers’ on the London Underground. I don’t have a lot of experience of road tunnels, not being a regular driver. I’d be surprised if the national rail tunnels were cleaned. Most of them will not be ‘finished’ inside so they don’t lend themselves to cleaning.

@populistensohn @reichenstein indeed. All hair and dust which will play havoc with signalling or go on fire if not removed.

A graffiti artist in São Paulo shamed his city into cleaning a tunnel by selectively cleaning skulls into the tunnel soot.

@reichenstein they look great and I think you folks are onto a good thing. I wish my city spent more effort keeping public places clean. Our BART system has beautiful hexagonal white tiles in most of the stations—or it would if they washed them more often. I can’t help but think that if we kept them clean it would increase people’s pride in the public infrastructure and willingness to fund it and care for it more.
