I'm taking my sewing machine on a subway ride to Times Square to see Uncle Jimmy Sewing Machine Extrordinaire whose shop is nearby. I've roped in a young lad to carry it for me. Like a proper Christmas family outing. 😀

Jimmy's address was a doorman building but the doorman did not tell us what floor to get off the elevator. Instead, he brought us out and around to a service entrance, through a kitchen, and pointed down some dark basement stairs. 'You'll find Jimmy down there,' he said. We followed a trail of sewing machines through the ages and creepy dressmaker dummies, and found, quite as you'd expect at the beginning of a fantasy movie, a little old man with glasses hunched over a work table.

I called Jimmy again. He's had my machine for 31 days now. He can't find it. I'm going back to the basement to help look for it.

It was HOT in the basement. I looked through three rooms that all kind of looked like this.

I wasn't finding it. Then he led me to.a bathroom, also lined with sewing machines. And there it was, on the floor of the bathroom, still in the Hello Fresh bag, still with my name and number on it. He'll work on it on Friday he says.

Got the machine. $90. He said it's all fixed and guaranteed if I have any more problems. There's a sewing sample on it. Looks good.

@FoxeinSocks came with me to carry it.

But...then as we were leaving and he has talking about the benefits of old machines and saying the plastic ones don't last he said:

'Let's hope manufacturing is making a comeback now. Everything is going to be great again.'

And @FoxeinSocks and I looked at each other and back at him trying to keep our jaws from hanging open and all I could think was 'Oh Jimmy, I hope your papers are in order.'

We just said goodbye.

Sigh.

@psneeze we didn't discuss money, timeline anything. He stuck my name and pone number on the machine and said he'll be in touch when he's had a look at it. There were many, many other machines there with names and phone numbers stuck on them. I have faith though.

@psneeze I called Jimmy as I had not heard from him yet. He took my name and the description of the machine. Then he called back after a few minutes for me to spell my name again. Now we wait.

@HarriettMB they all have names and numbers on them - but I guess not everyone comes back? He showed me where he wrote my name on a paper on the wall last week and said he didn't know how 'the guy didn't see it' when he told him to look for it. I have not seen any other guy there. But here's hoping. I wasn't going to be mean to Jimmy.
