Toot

I'm wearing glasses for the first time in 25 years. Back then I could see, now I can't, but for the first time in 0.25 Century I can look at something unfamiliar and have a reasonable chance of identifying it - without taking my phone out of my pocket.

@tink Oh wow. Will you share the experience more at length at some point? I'm curious 🙂

@notabene I was thinking I should write a post about them, so I'll jot down some notes just in case I get that far 😀

@sarajw it feels like it, yes. Still much else I'd like them to be able to do, but I've been wandering all over the house looking at things and asking them what I'm looking at. All the usual caveats about reliability, but so far they're proving more useful than not.

@tink your own senses have got you this far, presumably they're pretty good at sensing when it's giving you a bullshit answer 😅

Wonder what it's like when you're in a more open space, like how well it describes a big view as opposed to part of a room.

@sarajw Good question. I poked my head out into our back garden and got a similarly descriptive response. You're right about sensing when something's not quite right though - just like many people do when a news item, blog post, or search result doesn't seem quite right.

@jstark Best use I've put them to so far is to ask what was on my laptop screen (when my screen reader said nothing), and they told me the BIOS error message that was displayed - just by looking at the screen and asking. So convenient!

@tink It's super fascinating that such technology fits in glasses and makes a meaningful difference. At the risk of sounding like a shill, but have you tried https://aistudio.google.com/app/live? It's incredible, once you've activated the camera, you can have an actually meaningful conversation about what the camera "sees". And it's simply a Web app you can add to your home screen, not yet another native app taking up space on your phone. I wish they would put this tech in glasses soon, too.

@tomayac I haven't tried that, but iOS18.2 has something like it, and it's also on its way to the Meta Ray-Bans too apparently:

@tink This is so true. My mom's first comment to me when she saw me wearing my Meta glasses was, "you look fabulous". That's a major change from my previous glasses wearing days. That was years ago but she still remembers.

@ppatel Heh. I've often said I miss wearing my old glasses from back in the day, so in one sense I'm just happy to be wearing glasses again. Like I was happy to wear a watch again when I got my first Apple Watch.
