Mostly I don't like AI tools, but there are some things that I really think it could help me with. Like identifying random locations in photos of early 20th century Western Australia.

@samwilson I couldn't figure it out. Hopefully there aren't too many buildings marked Mercery (I think "
MERCERY (...?) SHOES" on the top) and your state archives are searchable π€
possibly 1937, if I squint hard enough at the corner but that feels too late . maybe the rest of the archive has information to guide that bit of the search - i looked around but couldn't see what I needed.

@kgoetz It's a tiny print, but I'll re-scan it to see if there's any more detail. I'm thinking it could be Carnarvon, and 1937 mightn't be too far off (it's possibly slightly related to this photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:St_Mary%27s_Star_of_the_Sea_Catholic_School#/media/File:Carnarvon_Convent_1927-28_(cropped).png ). But yeah, that's all conjecture really!

@samwilson Looks like βMercer β¦ Shoesβ. A little image manipulation might resolve it better. I use an old program Paint.net.

@samwilson So you'd already narrowed it down to Carnarvon and possibly associated with the Catholic school. I noted the distinctive angled corner and patterned bricks of the building on the right, and the building with the tall chimneys in the centre. I looked at the satellite images for a building with angled corners near the school and the first one I found was this one near the roundabout. As soon as I looked at it in StreetView I saw the building with the chimneys (the ANZ building).

@samwilson I should do more geolocation of Australia/NZ photos on Commons β I've got a 5 for 5 hit rate so far, and I really enjoy doing it.
