I got a new laptop a week or so ago (a #ThinkPad Carbon X1) and its fans have been screaming at me since I first turned it on. Very horrible noise! I've now installed the zcfan utility, and things are calm and quiet (and hovering around 55°). The new year can get underway I think. https://github.com/cdown/zcfan

How am I only learning about #PHP Composer's scripts-descriptions feature now?! I've wanted this for years.

Mostly I don't like AI tools, but there are some things that I really think it could help me with. Like identifying random locations in photos of early 20th century Western Australia.

Christmas day was a good time for ambling around taking photos of things that normally have lots of cars parked in front of them.

The element is for Unarticulated Annotations. Not for underlining stuff! (I can't quite articulate why.)

Why does Mastodon show me so many photos of cats? It is all cats. I never asked for this, but somehow the algorithm from the overlords knows that I want to see cats.

It's xmas evening, I'm supping on mince pies and brandy and waiting for the King to send me a message, and transcribing some old letters on Wikisource.

This one is from 1876, and says (maybe?) P.B.M.S.S on the corner. Does anyone have an idea of what this might say and mean?

There's a bug with accesskey shortcuts in Vector2022, and I'm surprised that there aren't more peole annoyed by it. I feel like I hit ctrl-alt-e to edit very often, and all it does at the moment is highlight the edit link.

After a run of a good few weeks of having my external monitor work perfectly when I re-dock my laptop, it seems that today it's decided that it's just too hot and too close to Christmas to be doing anything properly, and is refusing to work at all.

It seems only right that the 1960s instructions for cleaning the beer lines is (probably) covered in beer stains:

Gosh, much excitement at VentraIP's new offering:

"Looking to build a website with multiple pages? Now you can with our Multi-Page Websites Beta!"

Pretty cool eh?! More than one page on a website! But it's still in beta, so maybe you only get like 1.5 pages or something.

And does this mean they've been selling single-page websites all these years?

It seems I broke the OCR tool's API docs page (but not the API) in the last upgrade. Working again now: https://ocr.wmcloud.org/api/doc

(I turned off the continuous deployment, because it wasn't needed, and so did the deployment manually. Maybe the CD system is useful after all…)

I seem to be reimplementing #Markdown footnotes in #Twig. Working very well. Silly probably. Whitespace is weird, but still better than in MediaWiki templates!

Once you decide that hosting things on other people's computers is fine and often easier (with a good local syncing regime of course!) then it becomes hard to keep the motivation for running one's own servers. (He says, in words stored on someone else's computer.)
