I have wanted to try a quadcopter simulator for a long time but honestly I have been a bit intimidated and wasn't excited to discover nice gamepad joysticks weren't capable of flying a quad in a simulator.

20 minutes into Liftoff on my steamdeck, I am erractically zooming around in 3D mode and I realize this is like flying a BF2/3/4 helicopter but with way more agility to power your way of hairy situations and nobody is even shooting at you (or insulting you in chat).

Video games are weird.

I didn't realize that you can pretty much fly a quad like a massive helicopter with a lot of inertia, you can also fly a quad in more aggressive ways a large helicopter could never do of course but flying a quad like a big helicopter just leads to a smooth flying style which is perfectly fine for learning to fly.

a racing quad in a simulator can rip back and forth on the yaw axis in a way that if you try to do in any semi-realistic arcade helicopter game leads quickly to loss of control.

The difference is that for a really aggressive turn where you are also concerned about losing altitude, it is better to cant the helicopter up and turn into the gyroscopic plane of the rotors. It is like leaning into a turn on a bicycle just... in a more confusing form. In this way the main rotors take on the brunt of the acceleration force to pull the helicopter's mass through the turn instead of putting everything on the tail rotor to maintain control.

you can totally fly a quad like that tho
