Today I put two things together in my head that are closely connected in my mind subconsciously but I hadn't explicitly put it into words in my conscious...

The reason I have such a hard time genuinely believing society will genuinely accommodate my ADHD in the long term is that I have watched the reification of the concept of "attention span" into an ossified thing that cannot be challenged.

If you haven't been painfully aware of the moment to moment metabolism of this process, the convenient narrative that social media, "screens" and social media are destroying our capacity to pay attention and focus on anything is a dragon grown giant from feeding on the collective subconscious traumas of everyday life we suppress in a powerless nod of our heads when oligarchs tell us this suffering is normal...

As someone who has little power over what and for how long I can "pay attention" to things, the truth that this dragon is a total mirage or rather a thin disguise draped over the ongoing theft of the commons by the 1%... is obvious to me, but only because I have spent a good chunk of my life trying to believe the human mind worked like that too and it never got me anywhere but hating myself.

Trust me, I am an expert.

The cancerous reification of the unquestionable reality of "attention span" and that social media/smart phones are destroying it reminds me of experiencing U.S society in the wake of 9/11 a whole platform of ideas about Islam, terrorism, threats, and civil liberties suddenly became true and unquestionable as if they were precise descriptions of gravity or chemical reactions that were backed up by decades of research.

• The comparison isn't fair at all on grounds of total scale of violence and consequences, it is just the easiest most common shared experience I can point to for most people who live in the U.S. or in the orbit of it (ughh sorry).*

• facepalm* No, clearly the most obvious comparison is the genocide of Palestinians by the Israel/IDF, but it feels not right to use a metaphor like that right now, ughh what an awful year
