If you’re a long-tenured tech worker, what are you carrying because of that right now?

@anthrocypher supreme anxiety combined with an inherent distrust of almost any system (in both functionality and motivation)

@anthrocypher I have been retired for over 2 years after a 3 and a half decade career in tech, and I still have trouble starting deep work for fear of just being interrupted and having to context switch

@jimfl that’s one of those things that can sound small but is actually quite big to be on the inside of. That pattern doesn’t stick with you without some real grooves worn, and feeling absorption is out of reach is ~painful~

@anthrocypher deep climate grief, exhaustion from perpetual forced extroversion, and as another poster said, a mourning for the deep and meaningful work that never happened because I spend all my time "aligning" and updating and operationalizing.

@anthrocypher an overlapping set of beliefs where the influences and forces of the industry continuously push things to worsen in ways that are beyond anyone’s own will, while believing it’s possible for individuals to act and influence things locally such that they can be made better (or at least less worse) with ongoing effort.

@mononcqc My answer is roughly the same. The both/and of that is no small thing to carry; are there things you’ve found which help you hold those beliefs in tension?

@anthrocypher these words from Huising’s Moving Off The Map (https://ferd.ca/notes/paper-moving-off-the-map.html) maybe help me the most:

“organizations and institutions exist only in actual people’s doings and that these are necessarily particular, local and ephemeral. […] social worlds do not have an independent, stable existence but instead emerge from our collective action […] Within the system of roles, rules, and routines, there is far more room to maneuver than previously assumed”

@anthrocypher a result of this is a sort of idea that culture can, in one of many ways, be framed as the accumulation of decisions made that balance and trade-off different goals, values, and priorities.

By influencing my own daily choices and those of people around me, culture gets ever so gently nudged and is part of the big mess of things that slowly orient systems.
