When I made Vanillekipferl using my mother-in-law's recipe when I was living in Spain, everyone was impressed because they had never seen this Austrian specialty before. And it was hilarious when I insisted that everyone must say "Vanillekipferl" before they tasted them, but a German friend was stumped by the Austrian word "Kipferl".

Now that I'm back in Austria, where everyone has their own special recipe for Vanillekipferl, this is just embarrassing. They still taste good, but they look so clumsy, and I just want to ask my mother-in-law how to make them look elegant the way she did.

I seem to be missing my mother-in-law a lot this year.

@aderieg why was that german friend stumped? Everyone knows Vanillekipferl? My grandparents baked them, and they were from the north. Did they not grow up in Germany? Or just suddenly wondered about the word Kipferl?

@bookstardust That surprised me too. Do they have a different name in Germany? Or maybe he only realized that he didn't know the word "Kipferl" when he tried to translate the name into Spanish. Or maybe he had been living so long in Spain that he was starting to forget German words. We had a similar confusion with Marillenschnaps, when I had a bottle to share.

@aderieg nope, it's Vanillekipferl, so don't worry, you are doing everything right, and even better if they do not look like store bought ones♡
